Mokrosuky Castle tells the story of a former water castle that was converted into a Renaissance complex. A path also leads from the town center to a menhir and a view over the valley. You can plan a stay that combines cultural history with outdoor excursions.

Water Castle, Renaissance, and Preserved Traces

Mokrosuky Castle is a former water castle, built around the 15th century. In the southeast wing, masonry with two stone corbels has been preserved; on the east side of the castle, remains of the former moat can be seen. A semicircular niche survives from the castle chapel, which was added later.

In 1579, Volf Gothard z Perglas transformed the water castle into a two-winged Renaissance chateau. The arcade façade and sgraffito decoration date from this period. The surviving features reveal different chapters in the complex’s history: the moat, Gothic masonry, and chapel niche sit alongside features of the Renaissance conversion. The castle complex is listed in the Central Register of Cultural Monuments.

Exhibitions, Guided Tours, and Life at the Castle

The interactive armory and the exhibition on historical fencing offer a special way to explore the castle’s history: visitors are allowed to touch some of the exhibits. There is also a forge and a medieval black kitchen. Guided tours explain the castle’s history, life at the castle today, and its reconstruction. The castle is open seasonally; check the dates before your trip if you plan to take a tour.

In front of the castle are a monument to Prof. MUDr. Vojta and a memorial to the victims of the First World War. At cultural events, visitors can taste bread baked right in the castle’s bread oven. This tasting is only available during cultural events.

Menhir Trail and Walking and Cycling Routes

The Cesta menhirů trail begins in the center of Mokrosuky. It climbs to a crossroads with a menhir, which offers a view over the valley. The final section follows a road downhill at an easy grade. For route planning, this means that the climb is followed by a downhill road section. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

For a full day of touring, you can choose between hiking and cycling. The yellow-marked hike is about 12 kilometers long and goes via the former mining town of Hory Matky Boží to Velhartice. It begins in Mokrosuky with a visit to the castle; the starting point and destination are connected by railway line 185. Cycling Route 2091 is described as a full-day tour of about 25 kilometers through Pošumaví along the Ostružná River. It includes a castle visit lasting about 1 to 1.5 hours. Both routes are designed as day trips, but differ considerably in their approximate distance and mode of transport. Check the tour provider’s current information before planning.

Zámek Mokrosuky also lies on a route between Rabí, Velhartice, and Kašperk castles, which form part of Šumavské trojhradí. This regional connection adds three other named castles to your visit.

Accommodation and Getting There

The castle has four rooms, a kitchen, and additional facilities, which are rented only to one group at a time. The price covers the complete package of all four rooms, the kitchen, and the facilities. Group-only rentals are therefore an important consideration when choosing accommodation; ask about availability and specific terms before booking.

Mokrosuky has a railway stop on the Horažďovice–Klatovy line and is connected to surrounding municipalities by bus. If you plan to travel by train or bus, check the timetables before your trip.
