Maňovice combines small religious buildings, an unusual stone figure and an easy circular trail to create a place with a character of its own. The Maňovický drak on the outskirts of Maňovice is particularly striking: the artificially created dragon rises from a rock that emerged from a bend in the road to Pačejov. Anyone who wants to combine cultural details with a manageable hike will find several different points of interest here.

Chapel and Boží muka on the village square

The Chapel of St Bartholomew stands on the village square in Maňovice. Its hexagonal shape and pyramid roof give it an unusual appearance. At the same time, it is regarded as an example of small-scale vernacular religious architecture from around the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Together with the nearby Boží muka, the chapel forms a valuable complex.

The Boží muka of Maňovice is a Baroque column shrine made of local granite and consists of seven parts. It stands on a specially fenced, park-like plot in front of the village chapel and an old cellar. Its creation is dated to 1713; it was probably erected in connection with a plague epidemic. The village square thus brings together visible forms of Baroque piety and later vernacular chapel architecture.

The Maňovický drak between history and legend

The Maňovický drak is not simply a naturally formed rock. It was created by working on a stone that protruded from a bend in the road to Pačejov. The dragon was completed and consecrated in 1905. A stone surround with a wrought-iron fence around the dragon’s head was added in 1926 and is one of the object’s recorded features.

Its history is also accompanied by a local legend. According to the story, the stone dragon once lived in the rocks above the village. A witch turned it to stone; later, a consecrated cross was inserted into its head. This story should be understood as a local tradition and complements the documented dates with a legendary interpretation of the unusual stone.

An easy circular walk through Maňovice

The Maňovice Educational Trail begins at a crossroads in the southern part of Maňovice and ends there again as a circular route. The easy educational trail is 3.5 kilometres long. From Maňovice, it leads via the Maňovický drak and through Prasecký les back to Maňovice.

This allows you to distinguish between different focuses when choosing your activities: the village square brings together the chapel, Boží muka and historical details; the Maňovický drak adds an unusual cultural highlight; and the educational trail connects the village with the dragon and Prasecký les.
