Bolešiny combines nature experiences with engaging cultural details. Educational trails, views of the Šumava, historic chapels, local theater and a cycling route offer various ways to explore the town and its surroundings. This allows you to incorporate landscapes, activity and local culture into your travel plans.

Educational Trails and Landscapes

The “Toulky okolím Bolešin 2” educational trail is 3.5 km long and can be walked at a leisurely pace in about an hour. It leads through the forest and offers views of the highest peaks of the Šumava. With forest, distant views and a walking time of about an hour, this educational trail can be included in your daily plans as a compact walk.

The “Okolím Bolešin” educational trail runs between Bolešiny and Ostřetice. Its views extend across the Klatovská kotlina, the Šumava panorama and the Plánický hřeben. Six stations with information boards focus on the flora and fauna of the surrounding area, particularly birds. While the panoramas guide your gaze across the landscape, the boards direct it toward nature topics and especially the birdlife.

A Cycling Route Through Several Towns

A cycling route runs from Klatovy via Ostřetice, Petrovičky, Němčice, Újezd u Plánice, Plánice and Bolešiny back to Klatovy. Bolešiny is one section of a route connecting several towns. Unlike the educational trails, the focus here is on cycling between multiple towns. You can therefore view a walk in the surrounding area and a longer cycling tour as different ways of exploring.

Chapels and Local Culture

The cultural monuments include the Chapel of the Virgin Mary in Na Stráni, built in 1897. It contains an over-life-size statue of the Virgin Mary. The statue previously stood in an original wooden chapel that burned down. The history of the burned-down wooden chapel is therefore part of the history of the statue and the chapel in Na Stráni.

Bolešiny itself is also home to a small octagonal village chapel dating from before 1775. Its octagonal tent roof is interrupted by a lantern and topped with an onion dome. The interplay of the tent roof, lantern and onion dome defines the appearance of this small building. The village chapel complements the chapel in Na Stráni with its own architectural detail.

The town’s cultural present is also visible: the local cultural center in Bolešiny is the home venue of Ochotnické divadlo Bolešiny. The event tradition includes the “Fourth Advent Candle.” It traditionally combines a program by local amateur actors with a competition for the best Christmas pastries. Alongside the landscape and architectural history, theater and a seasonal culinary tradition therefore come to the fore.
