Baťov and the city’s architecture

A concise starting point for the city’s history is the Obchodní dům Otrokovice department store in the Baťov district. The building from the 1930s was designed by the architect Vladimír Karfík. It is also known as Prior and represents Czech functionalist architecture.

The Společenský dům is also part of Baťov’s architectural character. It was built according to a design by Vladimír Karfík and has been a listed building since 2014. The three-winged building from 1936 is considered an urban-planning and architectural landmark of the Baťov district. Some of the Baťa houses, especially in Baťov, have survived to this day in their original condition, without extensions or thermal insulation.

The central park in front of the Společenský dům also reflects the original urban planning. The green area, covering more than 2.5 hectares, separated the factory area from the social and residential area. It formed the recreational and functional centre of the garden city, where employees of the Baťa company spent their free time. A further architectural accent is provided by the religious building, which was built according to a design by Mojmír Korvas and consecrated in 1995. It is considered a defining building of náměstí 3. května and the city of Otrokovice.

Educational trails, cycling routes and the Baťa Canal

The Naučná stezka Baťov educational trail presents the history of Otrokovice on a circular route. The 4.4 km circular route includes twelve stations where the city’s history is presented. It follows paved paths through the city and can be used for walking, Nordic walking, running or cycling.

For longer routes, the Stezky Branou do Chřibů trails are available. They begin at the Baťa Canal landing stage in Otrokovice and include 22 km of marked circular routes that are also suitable for mountain bikes. The Baťa Canal itself is navigable for recreational boating along 53 km from Otrokovice to Rohatec. Thus, alongside historic urban sights, marked trails and a clearly defined range of water-based activities are also central to travel planning in Otrokovice.

Na letišti Nature Monument

The Na letišti Nature Monument is located in the cadastral area of Otrokovice. It protects a former channel of the Morava River with aquatic flora and fauna. Rare species include floating water chestnut, smooth newt, fire-bellied toad, common toad, green toad and common water frog. Grey herons and kingfishers are also found there. The nature monument complements the impressions shaped more strongly by urban history and architectural heritage with a protected waterside habitat.

Getting there and connections

Otrokovice railway station is a main terminal of the Zlínský kraj region and is located on line 330 of the Second Railway Corridor from Břeclav to Přerov. The regional single-track line 331 from Zlín or Vizovice also ends there.
