Dobrkovice: Village Culture in the Vizovické vrchy Valley

Dobrkovice lies in a deep valley of the Vizovické vrchy at an elevation of 276 metres. The Holomňa stream, a tributary of the Olšava, flows through the centre. Together with the preserved agricultural character, this creates a village landscape in which the scenery, watercourse and rural history stand closely side by side.

Valley, Stream and Rural Village Landscape

The Holomňa is one of the defining geographical features of the village. It flows through the centre and thus also accompanies the area around the village square. Another distinctive landscape feature is the Chlupáč forest: within the cadastral area of Dobrkovice, it covered a total of 120 hectares. The village has preserved its agricultural character, so the landscape does not merely serve as a backdrop but remains closely connected with the history of the settlement.

Orientation and Travel

Dobrkovice lies 1 kilometre east of the main road from Uherský Brod via Velký Ořechov to Zlín. The nearest railway station is in Biskupice. Those considering Dobrkovice as an accommodation destination can therefore first locate the village using these two reference points.

Chapel, Bell Tower and Village Square

The Chapel of Panny Marie, Pomocnice křesťanů stands on the village square, next to a bridge over the Holomňa. A wooden bell tower from 1832 is also located on the village square. It contains a bell from 1935. These three details combine a specific place, the course of the stream and two different years into an illustrative section of the village’s history.

The local chapel itself is also part of Dobrkovice’s more recent history: it was consecrated in 1997. Another historical testimony is the memorial to those who fell in the First World War. It was erected in 1921 and stands above a bend near the municipal office building. A new cross was consecrated in front of house no. 27 in 1947, on the occasion of the first mass celebrated by Vojtěch Fuglík, who came from Dobrkovice. A first mass, or primice, is the first mass celebrated by a newly ordained priest.

Historical Traces Above the Village

The Baroque statue of Saint John the Baptist dates from 1744. It stands on a bare ridge above Dobrkovice at a crossroads and has been protected as a cultural monument since May 1958. Thus, in addition to its age, the statue also has a clearly documented heritage-preservation significance. The oldest historically recorded name of Dobrkovice is documented for the year 1360, reaching considerably further back than these architectural and commemorative landmarks.

On Foot Through Dobrkovice

A walk through Dobrkovice leads from the village square to the upper end of the settlement and onward towards the ridge above the village. This makes it possible to connect different parts of the village: the square with its chapel and bell tower, the course of the Holomňa, the settlement itself and the Baroque statue at the crossroads on the ridge.
