Březnice – Landscape, Culture and Discoveries in Moravia

Březnice combines a distinctly hilly landscape with remarkable evidence of Moravian history. The village lies in the valley of the Březnice Brook below the western peaks of the Vizovice Highlands. Meadows and mixed forests characterize a large part of the municipal area, while almost no level ground is present.

Church and Protected Testimonies of Local History

The parish church of St. Bartholomew the Apostle, located in Březnice, stands at the center of the cultural heritage. The church is a protected monument with a Late Gothic core. It is considered one of the oldest churches in Moravia; the first records of it date from 1437. It is therefore not merely a single historic building, but a particularly old reference point within the history of the village.

Smaller monuments also give the surrounding area its own character. A monument protection zone was designated for House No. 21 in Březnice, including its shed and barn. In Kříby, in the cadastral area of Březnice, two trees were also officially designated as memorial trees: the memorial pear tree “Hrušeň u Slováčků” on January 29, 2016, and the memorial service tree “Oskeruše u Janečků” on July 18, 2022. The two different dates and tree species show that the idea of protection here is not limited to large structures.

Brook, Protected Area and Paths in the Surroundings

The Březnice Brook rises in Březnice and has two officially recognized sources. Nearby lies the European protected area “Březnice u Zlína,” which is part of the Natura 2000 network. It is classified as a meadow spring on the right bank of an unnamed right tributary of the Březnice. The protected area safeguards the snail species “vrkoč útlý” and thus represents a very specific natural feature that differs clearly from a generally described woodland or meadow landscape.

For a walk with an additional task, the outdoor educational trail in Březnice is a good choice. It leads through the municipality and includes ten questions; the answers form a riddle at the end. The route therefore becomes not merely a sequence of landscape impressions, but a shared search-and-thinking game. Nearby, a forest educational trail to a bunker of the anti-fascist resistance also provides access to the bunker in the municipal forest of the cadastral area of Bohuslavice u Zlína.

Kříby, Remembrance and a Former Mill Site

Kříby combines a connection with nature and a culture of remembrance. A resistance monument was erected there in 1955 to commemorate the tragedy of the residents of Březnice. The Peace Mound in Březnice at Kříby commemorates the victims of the Second World War and also offers a viewpoint over the surrounding landscape. Both places therefore carry a historical significance that goes beyond a mere viewpoint or a short stay in the countryside.

At the site of the former Březnický horní (Řihoškův) mill, a park-like layout has been created on the site of the former collection basin. The history of the mill should be viewed with the necessary historical reservation: presumably, no masonry remains still present today are original. It is precisely this combination of former use, later landscaping and preserved commemorative value that makes the site an independent part of the local history.

Active Attractions and Getting There

The Březnice Sports and Cultural Complex in the Filip district includes a multi-purpose court with a synthetic surface. Tennis, volleyball, basketball and small-sided football can be played there; the complex also includes a children’s playground. Thus, alongside nature and cultural attractions, there is also a clearly designated place for sporting activities and a break with younger travelers.

Březnice is also well connected by bus at weekends. The village lies on routes from Zlín to Uherské Hradiště, Uherský Brod and Luhačovice, as well as on long-distance routes to Slovakia. In addition, there is a dedicated Zlín–Březnice line operated by ČSAD Vsetín.
