Biskupice: Culture, Traditions and Cycling Routes

Biskupice combines a distinctive landmark, vibrant traditions and several clearly described routes to create a versatile destination. The Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was consecrated on 16 August 1997 by Archbishop Jan Graubner. A pilgrimage takes place there every year in August around the Feast of the Assumption. At the same time, Biskupice is one of the municipalities assigned to the ethnographic region of Luhačovické Zálesí.

Culture and Historical Traces in Biskupice

Several monuments and statues in Biskupice commemorate the history of the village. A stone cross erected in 1866 commemorates a cholera epidemic. Another stone cross was created in 1752 and moved in 1932 from the road to Velký Ořechov into a garden. The Liberation Monument was made and presented to the residents on the first anniversary of the liberation of Biskupice, on 1 May 1946. It was later moved to the main road, where it still stands today.

The statue of the Virgin Mary is also part of the village's history. It was erected in 1946 by the now-dissolved Association of Catholic Women and moved in 2001 to the open space in front of the chapel. North of Biskupice, a monument commemorates the crew of a crashed aircraft. The Romanian gunner Gheorghe Popescu lost his life, while pilot Paul Lazaroiu was able to escape by parachute.

Near the centre of Biskupice, the Baroque statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands on the bank of the stream. It was created in 1796 on the commission of the farmer Martin Vítek and is not an ordinary example of regional production from its time. For a walk through the village, this location offers a specific cultural point of interest without requiring you to confuse several sights with one another.

Fašank, Open-Air Cinema and Shared Experiences

The local Fašank tradition includes a procession of costumed groups accompanied by music, as well as singing and dancing. The tradition has been maintained in Biskupice since time immemorial and is intended to be preserved for future generations. During this custom, the masked participants are treated to doughnuts, pastries or meat and, above all, provided with spirits and beer. If you would like to experience regional culture not only through buildings but also through vibrant customs, Fašank is therefore a distinct focus of the village's history.

Biskupice's open-air cinema offers another form of shared experience. It was held for the first time in 2018; screenings take place at the football grounds of TJ TATRAN.

Cycling Routes and Paths Around the Village

For active days, you can choose between different route formats. The Luhačovice–Biskupice circuit leads to Biskupice and then to the local airfield. The route is 11 kilometres long and intended for road bikes. The Small Spa Circuit runs via Luhačovice and Biskupice to the local airfield, Řetechov and Pozlovice. It is 22 kilometres long and intended for trekking bikes and mountain bikes.

Another route is used by cyclists and pedestrians. Of its total length of 3,600 metres, 1,500 metres lie within the cadastral area of Biskupice. From Ottovka, the path follows the right bank of the Luhačovický potok along a cycle path to the edge of Biskupice. When planning a shared trip for people with different interests, it is helpful to distinguish this shorter path from the two circuits and to keep their respective lengths and intended bicycle types in mind.

Getting There and Orientation

Public bus routes with three stops run through Biskupice, as does a railway line with one station. Currently, no České dráhy trains stop at Biskupice u Luhačovic railway station. This distinction is important when choosing how to travel: The existence of a railway line does not automatically mean that you can currently use the station with trains operated by this company.
