Rymarov – Cultural History and Distinctive Cityscapes

Rýmařov at a Glance

Rýmařov combines an engaging history with an unusual cityscape. A large number of houses have black roofs: these include roofs with original slate coverings as well as roofs with newer coverings. The town hall, which was declared a cultural monument in 1966, stands in the centre. This gives you a place where historical traces can be discovered not only in individual exhibitions but also in the built environment.

Experience City History and Art

The “History of Rýmařov” exhibition reaches far back into the past. It presents finds dating from the time since the town was founded in the 1270s through to the 15th century. The Marie Kodovská Gallery in the artist’s former home on Mlýnská Street offers a different perspective on local culture. Her artworks and objects she used herself are displayed there.

The parish house is also one of the town’s defining historical buildings: it is a cultural monument and one of the oldest and most valuable buildings in the historic town centre. In the Church of St Michael, a simple Baroque rosary chapel was built in 1688 on the left side of the church nave. The chapel, the altar and the gallery are among its most original elements. The altarpiece oil painting depicting the Virgin Mary, Saint Dominic and Saint Catherine of Siena was created around 1725 by Jan Kryštof Handke, who came from Janovice.

Hrádek – Castle Site and Geological Heritage

Hrádek – Castle Site is a protected archaeological site. At the same time, Hrádek serves as an open-air extension of the geological exhibition of the Rýmařov Town Museum. The combination of archaeology and geology makes this place a distinctive part of Rýmařov’s cultural history, without limiting the subjects to a single era.

Hrádek also contains a reconstruction of the foundations of a residential building belonging to the town castle, with an attached heating installation. It illustrates the situation at the end of the 13th century. In this way, medieval history is conveyed not only through finds and dates but also through a specific architectural example.

Traditions and Distinctive Places

The Dřevařské, lesnické a myslivecké dny are held annually in Flemmichova zahrada. The programme includes, among other things, lumberjack competitions, demonstrations of modern forestry and timber-harvesting technology, hunting traditions, regional stalls, refreshments and an extensive supporting programme. In this way, a lively event complements the town’s museums, historic buildings and archaeological topics.

Kaple V Lipkách is considered a gem of North Moravian Baroque. From 2013 onwards, it was opened not only to parish members and pilgrims but also to tourists and visitors to the town.
