Rusín – Nature and Culture in the Osoblažsko Region

Rusín is home to a distinctive hilly landscape and an unusual natural attraction. Cultural heritage takes center stage in Hrozová. The Chapel of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary stands on Rusínský kopec. The 314 m-high hill forms the last foothill of the Osoblažská pahorkatina. Together with the Matějovická Cave, the narrow-gauge railway and Cycling Route 3, they create a destination where landscape, local history and ways of getting around are closely connected.

Landscape between Hill, Cave and Ice Age

The chapel’s location makes Rusínský kopec a clearly identifiable landmark in the surrounding area. Describing it as the last foothill of the Osoblažská pahorkatina indicates not only the name of the hill but also its geographical setting. Those interested in the landscape around Matějovice will also encounter the Matějovická Cave there. It is a natural attraction in a sandstone rock.

There is an important peculiarity to bear in mind when visiting the cave: the original entrance is buried. The Matějovická Cave is currently accessible through an artificially created entrance. This specific access situation distinguishes it from an ordinary rock formation and is part of the site’s history, just like its natural sandstone rock.

The formation of the landscape also dates back a long way. The area around Matějovice was shaped by an ice sheet during the Quaternary ice ages. After it retreated, stone moraines and sand deposits remained. This means the surroundings can be understood not only as a landscape for excursions but also as an illustrative site of geological change.

Hrozová: Church, Art and Traditional Heritage

A cultural focal point is located in Hrozová at the Church of St. Michael. The church was restored between 2010 and 2015. The church can be visited free of charge by prior arrangement. The parish church complex, including the surrounding wall of the adjacent cemetery, is listed in the register of immovable cultural monuments of the Bruntál District.

The Madonna of Hrozová is also part of Hrozová’s cultural heritage. It belongs to the relatively rare iconographic type known as the Madonna of the Rosary. It is currently on display in the exhibition building of the Silesian Museum in Opava. Thus, part of this cultural theme lies outside the village, while the Church of St. Michael preserves the specific historical connection in Hrozová.

The Hrozovské slavnosti represent a traditional annual gathering of the current and former residents of Hrozová and their friends. The Hrozovské slavnosti are organized by the Královský stolec association. For travel planning, this festival is particularly interesting as a traditional connection between the village, its former residents and its community life.

To Rusín by Bus and Narrow-Gauge Railway

Public transport options to Rusín include a bus connection and the Třemešná ve Slezsku–Osoblaha narrow-gauge railway. From one of its stops, the journey can be continued on foot or by bicycle. Cycling Route 3 in the Osoblažsko region also passes through Hrozová, Rusín and Matějovice.
