Roudno – Velký Roudný, Views and Culture

Roudno combines a distinctive volcanic landscape with scenic views, regional history, and traditional cultural sites. The Velký Roudný is particularly characteristic; it has been protected as a National Nature Monument since 1966. Roudno is also located in the immediate vicinity of the Slezská Harta Reservoir. Velký Roudný: Natural Monument with Unique Geology

The National Nature Monument protects a uniquely well-preserved stratovolcano from the Early Quaternary in the Bohemian Massif. Velký Roudný consists of three lava flows. A quarry was formerly operated in the longest, northeastern lava flow for basalt extraction. This historical use is part of the documented history of the mountain, while today its protected geological form primarily determines the distinctive character of the site.

Lookout Tower and Routes to the Summit

A prominent destination on Velký Roudný is the lookout tower, built in 2007. The 20-meter-high wooden structure consists of laminated larch beams on concrete foundations and has a covered observation platform at the top. From the tower, views extend to the ridge of the Hrubý Jeseník, the Nízký Jeseník, Krnovsko, Opavsko, the Beskids, and the Oderské vrchy. This means that an excursion can focus not only on the mountain itself but also on the various landscape areas visible from it.

Several paths and routes are available for planning an active day. The “Po vulkanitech” educational trail leads to the summit of Velký Roudný. The Křížová cesta Stations of the Cross leads to the memorial for the victims of the First World War near the summit. Regional cycling route No. 6148 also runs through the cadastral area of the municipality of Roudno. Depending on your preferred focus, you can therefore prioritize a route to the summit, a culturally oriented walk, or a cycling tour through the municipality.

Chapel, Traditions, and Monuments in Roudno

The Velký Roudný Chapel is protected as an immovable cultural monument under number 3941; the heritage protection has been in place since September 16, 1996. A mass dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul is held in the chapel every year. The New Year’s ascent of Velký Roudný and the gathering at the chapel have also been part of the traditions of the municipality of Roudno since 1978. These recurring occasions give the mountain a special local significance in addition to its role as a natural site and viewpoint.

Near the summit, the memorial for the victims of the First World War commemorates the residents of the municipality who fell, died, or went missing between 1914 and 1918. It consists of three commemorative plaques mounted on tuff stones, is listed as an immovable cultural monument, and was fully reconstructed in 2015. In Roudno itself, St. Michael’s Church is also listed in the Central Register of Immovable Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic under registration number 102169. A striking detail is the faces of its tower clock, which are made of 24-karat gold.
