Discover Liptaň: Observation Towers, Culture and Railway History

Liptaň is a destination for anyone who wants to combine panoramic views, regional history and distinctive buildings. North of the town, two described viewpoints offer different perspectives: Strážiště Observation Tower is located approximately 1.5 kilometres north of Liptaň and is signposted from the town. There is also an observation tower of the same name on the summit of Strážnice. From there, the view extends across the northern and eastern parts of the Osoblažsko region, over the Polish lowlands with Prudnik and Opole, and westwards to the ridges of Hrubý Jeseník, including Praděd.

Viewpoints with a clear regional focus

For your planning, Strážiště Observation Tower is the more specific reference point, as its location is given as approximately 1.5 kilometres north of Liptaň and the signposting from the town is explicitly mentioned. The observation tower on the summit of Strážnice, by contrast, represents a broader view across Osoblažsko, the Polish lowlands and the mountains to the west. The combination of its construction period, Neo-Gothic design and documented heritage protection makes the church an important historical reference point in Liptaň.

The Chapel of Our Lady of Help in Liptaň has a distinctly different character. It is a rural religious building made of rubble stone, with elements of late Baroque style, dating from the first half of the 19th century. Compared with the monumental Neo-Gothic church, the chapel displays a smaller, rural architectural style. Those interested in regional architecture will therefore find two different religious buildings here: the large 19th-century church and a chapel whose design preserves older Baroque elements.

History between remembrance and railway

Liptaň’s history also includes the Liptaň Tragedy. It took place on 22 September 1938 at the former gendarmerie station in House No. 261. Six Czech members of the State Defence Guard were murdered there. This event forms part of the town’s historical past and should be clearly placed in its proper context as an event of 1938.

Another historical focal point is the Osoblažská narrow-gauge railway. It was completed in 1898; on 14 December 1898, the first scheduled train reached Osoblaha. The railway thus represents a precisely datable period in the region’s transport history. Together with the observation towers, church and chapel, it creates a multifaceted picture of Liptaň, where landscape, architecture and history can be experienced side by side.
