Krnov: Sacred Heritage, Synagogue and Viewpoints
Krnov between pilgrimage site, synagogue and viewpoints
Krnov reveals its distinctive character where sacred history, Jewish heritage, historic architecture and sweeping views come together. This creates a destination with a variety of discoveries for you: you can visit a pilgrimage church on a hill, explore a synagogue as a museum and cultural venue, admire historic buildings or include observation towers in your personal itinerary.
Cvilín Hill as a place of religious history
On Vorderní Cvilín Hill above Krnov, at an elevation of 437 m, stands the Baroque, two-towered red-and-white pilgrimage Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows. Every year, it welcomes numerous visitors for regular religious pilgrimages. On the same hill stands the Church of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows, a national cultural monument, with a Stations of the Cross. Cvilín Hill therefore combines religious significance with surroundings that can consciously be experienced as a distinct excursion destination.
The view is also part of this place. The Lichtenštejnská rozhledna observation tower on Vorderní Cvilín Hill offers a far-reaching view of the surrounding area. Those who enjoy combining historic buildings and landscapes will therefore find a different way to experience Krnov here than on a simple tour of the city.
Jewish heritage and distinctive interiors
The Krnovská synagoga was built in 1871–1872 in the Neo-Romanesque style. Its Moorish interior is inspired by the architecture of Sephardic Jews and gives the building a distinctly individual atmosphere. The site currently serves as a museum, exhibition venue, and cultural and religious space. Since 2020, the Krnovská synagoga has been part of the “European Trails of Jewish Cultural Heritage” project; since 2021, it has also belonged to the “Technotrasa.cz” project of the Moravian-Silesian Region.
Another historic destination is located in Krnov-Kostelec: the Church of Saint Benedict was built at the beginning of the 13th century. Its original presbytery has been preserved as a sacristy. This detail in particular makes the church interesting for visitors who are interested in the development of sacred architecture over many centuries.
The Flemmichova Villa, music history and further viewpoints
The Flemmichova Villa was built between 1914 and 1917 as the family residence of textile manufacturer Theodor Flemmich. It was designed by Viennese architect Otto Prutscher. The exhibition rooms are open to visitors every day except Mondays; guided tours are available on request. This establishes a clear distinction for planning your day: visits to the exhibition rooms are regularly available, while guided tours take place on request.
Music history is also connected with Krnov. Franz Rieger returned to Krnov in 1844 as an organ builder. The Vyhlídka observation tower is also located in Ježník. The left tower of St. Martin’s Church was intended to become accessible for organised tours, with views from the gallery. Visitors were supposed to be able to see Krnov from the windows of the tower keeper’s apartment and from the gallery; this described possibility should therefore be understood as a planned, rather than certainly current, opening of the tower.
When choosing accommodation in Krnov, you can take these different focal points into account: sacred sites and historic interiors stand alongside viewpoints and architecture from various periods. This allows you to combine your search for a hotel with the experiences you actually want to make the focus of your stay, without reducing the city to just one attraction.
