Hošťálkovy: Village Structure, Cultural Heritage and Trails

Hošťálkovy combines a preserved village structure with remarkable cultural heritage and varied trails through the valley of the Kobylí potok. The stream divides the built-up area into two parts and gives the settlement a distinctive landscape character. Those looking for accommodation in Hošťálkovy for their trip will find not an interchangeable base, but a place where architectural history, archaeology, cycling and natural surroundings come together.

Village History and Notable Buildings

Hošťálkovy preserves the historic structure of a Waldhufendorf, a forest-strip village. A considerable number of valuable vernacular buildings have also survived. The historic character is particularly evident in the northern part of the village, where the single-nave Baroque Church of Saint Michael the Archangel stands. It was built in 1790–1792. Its projecting western tower façade is crowned by an onion dome.

Hošťálkovy Château is exceptionally well preserved in the Bruntál District and is listed as a cultural monument. The château courtyard contains a quatrefoil-shaped fountain that originally held a cast-iron statue of Bacchus. The statue now stands inside the château. The Skrbenský tomb in the cemetery by the parish church also commemorates the former landowning family. It is a regionally rare preserved noble tomb with two low marble sarcophagi for Kryštof and Kateřina Skrbenský, dating from 1686.

An unusual addition to the village’s history is the Museum of Historical Washing Machines and Washboards in Hošťálkovy–Vraclávek. The unique collection comprises around 160 washing mechanisms dating from 1850–1950. The range of discoveries therefore extends from sacred and aristocratic architectural history to an illustrative insight into everyday life in the past.

Archaeological Traces Around Vraclávek

In the cadastral area of Vraclávek, Luginsland is designated as a significant archaeological site. Remains survive of the castle, probably founded around the middle of the 13th century as a colonization stronghold; the rampart and moat are still part of the complex. In the southwestern part of the cadastral area, the medieval and early modern archaeological area along the Kobylí potok between Staré Purkartice and Hošťálkovy also preserves the field structure of a settlement probably dating from the colonization period.

Vraclávek’s history also reaches far back: before 1564, the settlement was newly populated by colonists, probably woodcutters, from the area around Wrocław. A path to the Burkvíz hillfort is part of the Městský turistický okruh. The remains lie between the Burkvíz settlement near Město Albrechtice and the municipality of Vraclávek. These historical connections make the area particularly interesting for travelers who want not only to view the landscape but also to read it through traces of settlement and fortifications.

Hiking, Cycling and Protected Landscape

Two marked hiking trails and an educational trail pass through the municipality of Hošťálkovy. Vraclávek also has a developed system of off-road cycling trails called Traily Kotel. For longer cycling trips, the 79-kilometer Krnovská padesátka cycling route runs through Hošťálkovy and Vraclávek. This provides a range of ways to get around: shorter trails with educational and orientation features, as well as a designated cycling route and off-road cycling trails.

The protected zone of the Krasovský kotel nature reserve extends into the cadastral areas of Vraclávek and Staré Purkartice. Together with the Kobylí potok, this creates a landscape in which natural surroundings, village structure and historical traces lie closely side by side.
