Býkov-Láryšov: Culture, Trails and Landscape

Býkov-Láryšov presents a remarkable mix of local history, waterways, hills and trails within a small area. For planning your trip, the division into two districts is particularly important: Býkov and Láryšov belong together, but are two kilometres apart. This means you can view the municipality according to your preferred focus, choosing between the historic centre, the landscape and active routes.

Two Districts with Their Own History

The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is located in the Býkov district and is one of the cultural monuments of Býkov-Láryšov. The church was built in 1727, making it a specific point of reference for the area's older history. Býkov itself was founded in 1238. The name is derived from cattle breeding, which was the settlers' main livelihood at the time of the settlement's foundation. Láryšov also has its own historical connections. The village was founded in 1793 on the site of a former pond. Its chapel dates from 1848, while the fire station was built in 1921. The local history also records that the first school in Býkov-Láryšov was founded between 1780 and 1790. Beekeeping was also very popular in the municipality historically. If you are looking for accommodation, you can therefore first consider whether you would prefer to base your stay more around Býkov or Láryšov, without losing sight of the connection between the two districts.

Hills, Streams and Ponds

The landscape is shaped by several bodies of water and hills. The municipality's cadastral area is bordered by the Čížina and the Hájnický potok. The Čížina flows south of Býkov-Láryšov, while the Hájnický potok runs through Láryšov. The Černý potok rises in Býkov. Two ponds were created near the municipality on the Hájnický potok. Above Býkov, the Ovčák hill reaches an altitude of 486 metres. Above Láryšov lies the Rybničná hill, which is 20 metres higher than Ovčák. The Pochev Reservoir is also located southeast of Býkov and is used as a natural swimming area. The nearby landscape therefore offers not only elevated points but also water bodies as distinct points of orientation.

Cycling and Hiking in Different Directions

Býkov-Láryšov has developed cycling routes and marked hiking trails. One local cycling route leads west from the municipality into the Hrubý Jeseník area. Another route runs eastwards via a border crossing near Úvalno to Poland. These two directions offer different possibilities for an active outing, without needing to be combined into a single route. The hiking trails also focus on different features. The green-marked hiking trail leads north from the municipality, passing the Hájnický ponds and the Šelenburk castle ruins. The castle ruins lie at an altitude of 423 metres; the trail then continues to Krnov. A green-marked hiking trail also runs eastwards to Úvalno near a forest lodge whose exact location is not specified. This provides a simple guide for choosing accommodation: Býkov is centred on the historic church, Ovčák hill and the southeastern landscape around the Pochev Reservoir; Láryšov brings the chapel, fire station, Hájnický potok and the higher Rybničná hill into the local picture.
