Castle and Museum as a Cultural Focal Point

Zámek Bruntál was converted from an originally late Gothic castle on the town walls into a Renaissance château at the end of the 16th century. The building has the floor plan of a segment of a circle, arcades in the courtyard and a clock tower. The most valuable interiors are open to the public: these include a chapel on the ground floor and halls on the first floor with Rococo wall paintings and original furnishings. A visit to the château therefore combines a view of its overall form with the appreciation of individual historic rooms.

Two permanent museum exhibitions are accessible in the oldest part of Zámek Bruntál, the so-called Old Palace dating from the early 16th century: “Příroda Bruntálska” and “Řemeslo má zlaté dno – řemesla a živnosti bruntálského regionu”. In addition, the natural history collection of Muzeum v Bruntále covers geology, botany, zoology and entomology. Muzeum v Bruntále can be reached on foot, by bicycle, car, bus and train. The museum’s thematic range therefore extends from natural history to the region’s crafts and trades.

Park, Views and Town History

The grounds of Zámek Bruntál preserve remnants of Bruntál’s former town walls, a bastion and a ground-level Sala terrena. There are also 11 sculptures; the park covers 2.5 hectares and is used for concerts. In the park, historic traces and sculptures combine with the ground-level Sala terrena to create a cultural focal point in its own right.

The parish church Farní kostel is the oldest stone building in Bruntál. Since September 2024, its observation tower has offered views of Bruntál and its surroundings. The Piarist Monastery in Bruntál was the largest Baroque building in the town and contributed to its cultural development. The grammar school housed there laid the foundations for the local theatre tradition. The burgher house Gabrielův dům served as the town museum in the 1950s. These different buildings lead through several historical layers of the town’s history, from ecclesiastical and monastic influences to its later use as a museum.

Uhlířský vrch and Active Experiences

Uhlířský vrch is considered the youngest extinct volcano in the Czech Republic. The area is protected as a natural monument and covers 4.7 hectares. From Uhlířský vrch, you can see valleys, mountains, hills, meadows and fields in every direction. A new educational trail runs through the protected area.
