Veliš U Jičína: Church, Castle Ruins and Viewpoint
Accommodation in Veliš U Jičína
Veliš U Jičína combines a late Baroque monument in the village centre with the historic traces of the castle on Veliš Hill. There are also designated memorial sites, views of Jičín and Český ráj, as well as a clearly described hiking connection. This makes it possible to combine cultural history, landscape and physical activity when planning a trip.
St. Wenceslas Church in the centre of Veliš
The St. Wenceslas Church complex in Veliš is a late Baroque monument. The present church was built from 1747 to 1752. The complex includes an access ramp lined with statues and two chapels topped with sculptures. As a result, the complex offers not just a single sacred building but also several architectural details that can already be appreciated on the approach.
St. Wenceslas Church stands in the centre of Veliš on an artificially constructed terrace. This is enclosed by a high wall whose exterior is faced with larger irregular sandstone blocks. The church is listed in the Central Register of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic under registration number 22287/6-1429.
Memorial sites and history on Veliš Hill
There are also smaller historical points of interest in Veliš apart from the church. The Šlik family tomb at the Veliš cemetery is designated as a monument of local significance. The statue of the Immaculata at the crossroads to Vesec is also designated in Veliš as a monument of local significance.
Veliš Hill is now a popular viewpoint. The castle on Veliš Hill was once considered one of the strongest castles in Bohemia, and the Basel Compacts were kept in the castle for a long time. In 1658, the destruction of Veliš Castle was decided. Today, only a few structural remains of the castle survive on Veliš Hill. It is precisely this contrast over time that makes the site an interesting historical stop: a once important castle is now present mainly through its remains and its location.
Views and the hiking trail from Jičín
The Veliš castle ruins offer views of Jičín and the landscape of Český ráj. The Veliš observation pillar also stands on the hill. It is made of brick, is 10.5 metres high and has a cruciform ground plan.
If you would like to reach the castle ruins on foot, a yellow-marked hiking trail leads there from Jičín over approximately 7 km. The route thus connects the starting point of Jičín with a specific historical destination, while its length provides clear guidance for planning your own day.
Baroque landscape in the wider area
In the wider region around Veliš lies Mariánská zahrada, a unique designed Baroque landscape. Four chapels were built in the forests of Velišský hřbet. This extends the cultural character of the surroundings beyond the church and castle ruins to include a Baroque-influenced landscape and scattered sacred buildings.
