Königgrätz – Baroque, Mountains and Special Excursions

Königgrätz combines historic towns, baroque complexes, striking mountain landscapes and unusual nature experiences. Between Hradec Králové, the rocks of Adršpach and Krkonoše National Park, you will find very different ideas for shared discoveries, active days and quieter breaks.

Baroque Complexes and Vibrant Culture

One particularly versatile cultural destination is Kuks Hospital. The baroque complex includes a Church of the Most Holy Trinity, the Sporck family crypt, sculptures by Braun, a baroque pharmacy, a monastery garden and a sculpture lapidarium. This brings architecture together with art, history and designed landscapes in one place.

In the historic centre of Hradec Králové, the White Tower and the Gothic Church of the Holy Spirit stand alongside architecture associated with Josef Gočár. The city is also a regional cultural meeting place, with Rock for People, a jazz festival and exhibitions. At the Veselý Kopec open-air museum, you can see traditional folk architecture, historic homes, mills and demonstrations of traditional crafts.

Krkonoše and Adršpach: Mountains, Trails and Rocks

The eastern part of Krkonoše National Park covers 65 percent of the park's area and includes territory in 16 municipalities. The region offers around 800 kilometres of marked summer and winter hiking trails, as well as approximately 500 kilometres of maintained cross-country ski trails. More than 400 kilometres of official cycle routes are designated within the national park.

A striking highlight is Sněžka: at 1,603 metres, it is the highest mountain in the Czech Republic; visitors can reach the summit via several routes or by cable car. The Adršpach-Teplice Rocks form a large sandstone rock city with narrow gorges, high rock towers and caves.

Excursions for Different Daily Rhythms

The Adršpach railway station is located directly in front of the entrance to the rock park. Cycle paths lead directly to the Adršpach Rocks, and there is bicycle storage near the entrance. One route is suitable for children and can be shortened by returning by train from Teplice. For a different kind of active day, the approximately 19-kilometre Cyklookruh Rozkoš route connects municipalities around the Rozkoš Reservoir; along the way, there are rest areas, shelters, service stations, bicycle racks and chargers for e-bikes.

If you would like to plan quieter days, Janské Lázně, Lázně Bělohrad and Lázně Velichovky offer spa and wellness services focused on treating disorders of the musculoskeletal system. The nature along the Orlice River is also remarkable: several hundred plant and animal species live in and around its immediate surroundings, including around 120 protected species.

Further Routes Through the Region

The 35-kilometre Krkonoše Beer Trail combines mountain hikes with tastings at local microbreweries. In the city forests of Hradec Králové, dozens of kilometres of paths for walkers and cyclists lead to educational trails and rest pavilions. Regional specialities include Krkonoše kyselo, a sauerkraut and potato soup, and Krkonošské trubičky filled with nuts and honey.

You can reach Hradec Králové from Prague by bus or train in approximately 90 to 120 minutes. Year-round buses and trains in the region are supplemented by tourist services and cycle buses.
