Soberaz: UNESCO Geopark, Culture and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Soberaz
Soběraz combines a long local history with a location in the Český ráj UNESCO Geopark. The entire cadastral area lies on the eastern edge of this geopark. In addition, there is a blue-marked hiking connection, historic buildings, and monuments dating from various centuries. If you would like to combine culture and trails through a geologically shaped landscape during your trip, Soběraz offers several specific points of interest for doing so.
Location and Getting to Soběraz
The quickest way to reach Soběraz is via a turnoff from the Jičín–Lomnice nad Popelkou road between Valdice and Železnice. This geographical location also places the village on the eastern edge of the Český ráj UNESCO Geopark. When choosing your accommodation, it is therefore particularly relevant whether you want to focus your stay on local history, trails through the cadastral area, or both.
Historical Traces in the Village
The first written mention of Soběraz dates from 1362 and is found in the court book of the town of Jičín. A much more recent, but equally distinctive trace is the Chapel of Saints Peter and Paul. It was built in 1717 by the Carthusians from Valdice and is one of the village’s specific historical points of reference.
In the western part of Soběraz stands rural house No. 35. It is an example of woodcarving and folk architecture from the late 18th century. Rural house No. 39 in Soběraz is a protected cultural monument. Both houses reveal different facets of the history of rural construction and craftsmanship, without requiring you to limit yourself to a single attraction.
Smaller monuments also add to the character of the village. A statue of the Virgin Mary in Soběraz dates from 1870. The monument in front of the local cemetery commemorates the Hussite past and those who fell in the First World War. A monument in Soběraz was unveiled in 1922. The individual years point to different historical layers that can be discovered while walking through the village.
Hiking and Regional History
A blue-marked hiking trail runs through the cadastral area of Soběraz. For a stay with different daily rhythms, this offers an independent way to experience the village not only through its buildings but also through its surroundings. The marked trail can serve as a guide for your own exploration, without requiring a specific route or walking time.
Another connection to the region’s history is provided by the educational trail “Following the Traces of the War of 1866 in the Hořice Region.” Soběraz is one of the municipalities involved in this educational trail. The historical perspective therefore extends beyond the local history and encompasses a regional theme. Depending on the focus of your trip, you can therefore consider Soběraz for culture, landscape, and regional history.
