Samšina combines an impressive cultural history with a landscape whose volcanic past remains visible to this day. The Church of Saint Wenceslas with its bell tower, the Dubolka Nature Monument and the location in Český ráj give you several concrete starting points for planning your trip. The range extends from historic architectural details to a tourist trail and a designated cycle route.

Church and local history

The Church of Saint Wenceslas is a Gothic building dating from the mid-14th century. During a late Baroque renovation in 1785–1787, the present western presbytery and sacristy were added. Together with the bell tower, the church is protected as a cultural monument under ÚSKP number 37589/6-1363. The bell tower itself also has distinctive architectural features. It is hexagonal, displays late Gothic forms and was built using a post-and-beam frame construction. A coin of the Margraves of Meissen, Frederick II and William III, who jointly ruled from 1442 to 1445, was cast into its bell. This detail also makes the history of the building interesting for visitors who look out for small, unusual pieces of evidence during a tour of the village. In front of the church, on the village square, stands a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, a valuable late Baroque sculptural work. The statue of the Virgin Mary in Samšina is another valuable example of Baroque art in a rural setting. The historic appearance of the village is complemented by the new school building, completed in 1895, and by the rectory near the church. It was created by converting a residential building belonging to an original fortress. At the edge of Samšina, a Baroque stone reconciliation cross commemorates a fatal historical accident involving a horse. A statue of Saint Vincent was erected at the grave of the accident victim in 1782. The cross and the statue thus preserve a specific local tradition that differs from the larger sacred buildings and representative works of art.

Dubolka and the volcanic landscape

The Dubolka Nature Monument is a neovolcanic hill with thermophilous flora and comprises three hills. Its basalt peaks rise 20–30 metres above the surrounding terrain. They bear witness to the landscape’s ancient volcanic history and give the nature monument a clearly recognizable geological character. Dubolka can be reached from the road via a walkable tourist trail. This means that, alongside Samšina’s historical themes, there is also a specific landscape feature where the geological formations and thermophilous flora take centre stage. Anyone wishing to combine different types of experiences on a trip will find a different focus here from the church, bell tower and Baroque art.

Český ráj and Cycle Route 4079

The part of Samšina located north of road I/16 lies within the Český ráj UNESCO Geopark. Samšina is also in the immediate vicinity of the Český ráj Protected Landscape Area. Road I/16 runs through the southern part of the municipality, outside the built-up area. This precise description of the location helps you distinguish between the different parts of Samšina without broadly equating the village with a single landscape area. For exploring by bicycle, Cycle Route 4079 provides a specific regional connection. It runs through Samšina between Příchvoj and Sobotka and is part of the cycle route network in Český ráj. When planning further, you can therefore choose between different focuses, including cultural and historical discoveries, the Dubolka Nature Monument and a signposted cycle connection.
