Vidonice between a Cultural Monument and Landscape

If you are looking for a less interchangeable stay in the Czech Republic, Vidonice offers a protected cultural monument, a natural monument, and a historic mill with a sawmill. The church stands on the slope above the village, while trees, meadows and the Bystřice River shape the landscape in the Kalské Valley. Here, sacred architecture, a waterside landscape and former craft use stand side by side.

The Church of St. John the Baptist

The defining building of Vidonice is the Church of St. John the Baptist. It stands as a protected cultural monument on a slope above the village. The building is oriented and single-nave; its oval chancel end gives the church interior a clearly recognizable architectural form that is characteristic of the church interior. The tower also has a characteristic detail: it is topped by a bulbous dome with a lantern.

For its historical and local context, it is also important that this is a branch church. Mass is celebrated there only for pilgrimages and the church festival. Thus, not only the building's appearance but also its particular ecclesiastical use forms part of Vidonice's identity.

Depression at the Wooded Ridge

Vidonice lies at an elevation of 460 m in a shallow depression on the southern slope of a long, partly wooded ridge. This precise setting explains the transition between open settlement areas and the wooded sections of the ridge, without reducing the village to a purely mountain destination.

A stream rises at the foot of the ridge, flows through Vidonice and, after the confluence, takes the name Bystřice. Until the confluence, it retains the designation “stream.” The protected Kalské Valley natural monument also includes the cadastral area of Vidonice. In the Kalské Valley, the Bystřice River winds between trees and meadows. Alongside the church, this places a natural area at the center, one defined by its watercourse, meadows and wooded vegetation.

Historical Traces and Specific Orientation

Another historical feature is the historic mill at house number 33 in Vidonice. It also had a sawmill. Together with the church, it shows that the history of the village can be read not only in a single architectural monument but also in former uses and traces of craftsmanship.

A distinctive landmark is the “Rašínská lípa” memorial lime tree between Vidonice and U Borovičky. It stands about 100 m to the right of a right-angled left-hand bend in the direction of the industrial zone. The information is deliberately precise and preserves the approximate distance that serves as an orientation point here.

In the Kalské Valley, camping on meadows or near the water is not permitted. Cycle Route No. 4096 runs from Pecka to Horní Brusnice.
