Between Castle Ruins, Mountains and Special Excursions
Kumburský Újezd combines a medieval castle ruin, a distinctive hiking route, mountains in the surrounding area and farther afield, as well as a former quarry with a history of diving. This gives the village a range of starting points for a journey through the landscapes and culture of the Czech Republic. Visitors who enjoy exploring on foot will find specific destinations here, as will travelers interested in historic buildings or unusual regional places.
Kumburk and Cultural Destinations
Kumburk, the ruins of a Gothic castle, are located near Kumburský Újezd. A viewing platform offers a special view of the Krkonoše Mountains and the Bohemian Paradise. The ruins combine a historic atmosphere with views of two different landscape areas.
The Chapel of the Virgin Mary stands directly in Kumburský Újezd. It is an immovable cultural monument and features a niche framed by pilasters with an almost life-size statue of the Virgin Mary. The Lázně Church and Valdštejn Church are also located in the wider region. The Gothic Dřevěnice Fortress is likewise situated near Kumburský Újezd and is one of the stops on the Kumburská dvacítka. Together with Kumburk, these sites create a culturally oriented area for excursions.
Mountains and a Designated Hiking Route
The landscape around Kumburský Újezd includes several mountains: Maxinec, also known as MLázovický chlum, Tábor and Přivýšina are located nearby. Strážník lies in the wider regional area. Thus, the surroundings include several mountain destinations in addition to Kumburk.
The Kumburská dvacítka is a moderately difficult, 20-kilometer hiking route. Its length makes it a tour for a longer day of hiking, while its moderate difficulty describes a more demanding route than a short walk. It begins and ends at the children's playground in Kumburský Újezd. Along the route, hikers reach the ruins of Kumburk Castle via a red-marked section at kilometer 13.7. The castle section connects the longer hike with a historic destination. Since the route starts and ends at the same point, it can be planned as a continuous tour.
Rumchalpa and Former Mills
Rumchalpa in Kumburský Újezd reveals another facet of the area. The former quarry has been used for recreational and technical diving since 1979 and is suitable for diving training. Rumchalpa thus complements the hiking route with a water-based activity.
Three former mills stand near Kumburský Újezd along the Tužín Stream, also known as Stříbrnice or Ořeška. The stream and the historic mills give this excursion destination its own regional character.
