Jitschin combines impressive buildings, distinctive routes and experiences for different age groups. Here, you can discover historical details, choose a guided city tour or explore the surrounding area on foot and by bicycle. Families can also enjoy imaginative stops connected with Rumcajs.

Historical Landmarks and Vibrant Culture

Valdická brána was built from 1568 to 1578 as part of Jičín’s fortifications. Its observation tower is 52 metres high and has 156 steps. Visitors can access the viewing walkway and the attic, where they can learn about the roof structure and find exhibition rooms. Kostel sv. Ignáce is the oldest surviving building in Jičín. Concerts and lectures are held in the synagogue at Židovská 100 Jičín.

In July and August, Kostel sv. Ignáce is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. During this period, guided tours with commentary are offered on Fridays at 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., and on Saturdays at 10 a.m. and noon. The guides from Valdštejnovo muzeum a mincovna also offer guided city tours with commentary through Jičín. This makes it possible to get to know the city not only through individual buildings, but also in the context of its history.

Valdštejnská lodžie is a unique early Baroque monument and at the same time a cultural centre focusing on live art, alternative culture and unusual family events. It therefore represents another side of Jitschin: historical architecture is combined here with contemporary cultural life.

Routes Through the Landscape and Surrounding Area

Lipová alej is a unique natural monument. The avenue, just under two kilometres long, leads from the centre of Jičín to Valdštejnská lodžie. Its gravel path is suitable for pedestrians and cyclists. The route therefore provides a clearly described connection between an urban starting point and the early Baroque monument.

Rumcajsova stezka is a 12-kilometre circular route that starts and ends at Valdštejnovo náměstí. It leads via Kbelnice, Mount Brada, Prachov and Holín back to Jičín. Those looking for a longer excursion with a fixed starting and finishing point will find a route with several stops here, rather than a short urban loop.

Ideas for Families and Choosing a Location

Rumcajsova ševcovna includes Manča’s herb garden, Cipísek’s zoo and a playroom for the youngest visitors. You can also visit the shop beneath the tower, where Rumcajs practised his craft for many years. The Jičín–zastávka railway station, located in the immediate vicinity, is also relevant for finding your way around Valdštejnská lodžie. When looking for accommodation in Jitschin, you can therefore choose between a culture-oriented stay, walks and a family route without mixing up the different experiences.

For further searches, you can also view Mlynec, Podulsi, Libun, Staré Smrkovice, Stav, Nova Paka, Doubrava and Mlázovice.
