Zachrašťany brings together an old fortress, Bronze Age finds, demonstrations of historic crafts, and specific places of remembrance. The municipal library with its creative workshop and a wooden bell tower are also among the topics that help visitors discover the area. For planning your trip, this provides a picture that ranges from the area’s early history to cultural activities.

The Old Fortress and Early Traces

Zachrašťany was founded on the site of an old fortress. It stood south of the village, in meadows on a rise called Hrubý kopec; the local lord resided there. The named hill links the history of the fortress to a specific place. In 1425, the old fortress was captured and destroyed. Its founding, its role as the lord’s residence, and its destruction are important milestones in the area’s history.

Archaeological finds from the Bronze Age have been discovered in the municipality. They date from long before the fortress’s recorded destruction in 1425 and add a much older layer to the area’s history. Those interested in a place’s past will therefore find both prehistoric traces and a specific historical account centered on the old fortress.

Library, Workshop, and Crafts

A municipal description last updated in 2015 lists almost 4,000 titles from various genres at the municipal library. Since the collection may have changed since then, contact the library directly for information about its current offerings. The library also has a creative workshop for children and adults; participation is possible by arrangement. Ask there about current dates if you would like to include the workshop in your trip plans.

At Zachrašťanský Jarmark 2016, visitors could watch and try traditional crafts: repoussé metalwork, candle making, wire weaving, embroidery, and patchwork. The program at the time combined demonstrations with hands-on participation and ranged from metalworking to textile techniques. Zachrašťanský Jarmark was held for the second time on July 15, 2017. If you are looking for event dates for a particular travel year, check them separately.

Places of Remembrance in the Village

The monument to Dobromil Špinka stands at an intersection next to house No. 1. Špinka served in the British Royal Air Force and was killed on March 3, 1942, in an air raid on Emden. The monument thus connects a specific place in Zachrašťany with his wartime fate. A wooden bell tower also stands opposite the municipal office. Both sites offer their own points of interest if you are interested in memorials and notable features of the municipality.

Surroundings and Accommodation

The area around Zachrašťany is wooded and is considered suitable for mushroom picking and tourism. Alongside the historical topics, the landscape is also a focus, without requiring any particular excursion.
