Valdíkov – Pond Landscape, Mill and Cycle Path
Accommodation in Valdíkov
Valdíkov between Two Ponds
Valdíkov lies in a gentle valley depression on the shore of Valdíkov Pond. Covering 16.7 hectares, it is the larger of the two ponds that shape the character of the village. Opatský Pond, which covers 12.9 hectares, is also located below Valdíkov. In this way, the village combines a manageable rural landscape with clearly recognizable bodies of water—a fitting starting point for anyone wishing to combine nature, history and peaceful exploration during a stay in the Czech Republic.
Valdíkov Pond is part of a pond landscape created in the 14th century. Its construction is connected with a Benedictine convent. The waterways are also clearly documented: the water from the ponds of Valdíkov is diverted via the Mlýnský Potok to the Jihlava River. This means that the landscape can be understood not only through its individual bodies of water, but also through their connection to a larger river system.
Cycle Path and Doubrava Retention Reservoir
The Doubrava retention reservoir offers one way to reach Valdíkov actively or include it in a cycling route. A marked cycle path toward Valdíkov runs in the immediate vicinity of the reservoir.
For the time being, the Doubrava retention reservoir serves exclusively aquatic animals. This special purpose distinguishes it from the ponds that appear as defining features of the Valdíkov landscape. Those wishing to compare different forms of waterscapes will therefore find distinct, clearly differentiated examples on site.
Opatský Mill, Chapel and Local History
A central cultural landmark is Opatský Mill. It is located at a weir below Opatský Pond on the Mlýnský Potok. The origins of the mill date back to the 14th century; its more recent history began in 1721. Its location on the watercourse makes the mill an illustrative reference point where the ponds, the Mlýnský Potok and the historical development of the village can be conceptually connected.
Valdíkov is also home to the Chapel of the Holy Trinity, dating from 1874. A church feast is held annually for the Feast of the Holy Trinity, at the transition from May to June. This date adds a recurring local occasion to the historical sites that are visible year-round.
Valdíkov is associated with the founding of a Benedictine monastery in 1101.
Accommodation Connected with the Mill
One specific accommodation option is offered by Jezdecký klub Opatský mlýn. It has five sleeping places under a shelter, as well as space for ten tents. Thus, in addition to looking for accommodation in Valdíkov, a simple form of overnight stay with a direct connection to the name Opatský mlýn is documented.
