Slavíkovice combines distinctive architectural history with traces of old milling technology and active exploration by bicycle. Anyone looking for a place with several historical layers will find a Baroque church with a Romanesque core, preserved mill equipment beneath a pond dam and a cycling tour that passes through Slavíkovice. The local railway history and ponds also shape the themes through which you can get to know the place in greater detail.

St Catherine’s Church: Baroque Church with Older Structural Elements

The Church of St Catherine is the main focal point. The building dates from the Baroque period and was constructed from 1749 to 1767. At the same time, it preserves significantly older elements: in the western part of the nave, meaning the elongated main part of the church, there is a Romanesque core dating from around 1200. The church tower dates from the first half of the 13th century.

The furnishings include an organ by Jan Komorník of Rouchov. A cemetery directly adjoins the church, with two chapels topped by thatched roofs. This combination of a sacred building, an organ and the unusually roofed chapels makes the area a concentrated cultural and historical site in Slavíkovice.

Ponds, Barn and Preserved Milling Technology

An old barn stands by Stodolák Pond near the church. Another noteworthy connection to the region’s economic and technological history can be found beneath a pond dam: the preserved mill equipment of Slavíkovický mlýn is located there. The site therefore shows not only representative architectural history, but also traces of the former use of water and mills.

The former fortifications of the settlement can also still be identified in a specific surviving remnant. The former fortress of Slavíkovice stood near the church; its cellar has been preserved beneath the present-day vicarage. It is the cellar of the former fortress that survives, not the fortress itself. In addition, a road in Slavíkovice runs above the shore of the extensive Návesní rybník pond.

Railway as a Technical Monument of the Vysočina Region

Another historical point of interest is the single-track local Jemnice–Moravské Budějovice railway line. It was completed in 1896 and is 20.8 kilometres long. The line is described as an interesting technical monument of the Vysočina Region. The Lhotice u Jemnice railway station is also relevant for orientation on the way to Slavíkovice: from there, Slavíkovice can be reached on foot via a narrow asphalt road.

Discover Slavíkovice on a Cycling Tour

The 29 km cycling tour “From Jemnice to Police and the Mills on the Želetavka” offers a different perspective. It passes through Slavíkovice and is presented as a cycling outing. Anyone wishing to combine historical details with an active pursuit during their stay can therefore explore Slavíkovice through both its church and ponds and this designated cycling tour.
