Pyšel combines a distinctive cultural monument with vibrant pilgrimage traditions. At the centre of the town stands the Pyšelská tvrz, the very well-preserved tower of a 14th-century water castle. The complex has the status of a cultural monument and gives the town centre a historic character. The Pyšelská tvrz is privately owned and used for private purposes. As a result, the tower in the town centre combines a medieval architectural history with present-day private use in Pyšel.

Historic Sites in the Town Centre

A second important landmark is the Church of Saint Barbara. The Neoclassical building dates from 1788. A more recent phase in its architectural history can also be seen on the exterior façade: it underwent extensive restoration in 2008. Thus, several historical layers meet in Pyšel – the medieval water castle, the Neoclassical church, and the preservation of historic buildings in the present day.

The church is also associated with an established religious tradition. The annual pilgrimage at the Church of Saint Barbara takes place on the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 15 August. If you plan your visit for this date, you will encounter a specific part of the local annual cycle. The pilgrimage is therefore not merely a historical reference, but a recurring occasion that connects the church with lived religious practice.

Stations of the Cross and Chapel in Stráž

Another aspect of Pyšel is revealed by the local Stations of the Cross. It is laid out as an outdoor devotional path and comprises 14 traditional stations. The path begins at the local cemetery and leads uphill to Stráž Hill.

Its length is also noteworthy when considering the Stations of the Cross: it is approximately as long as the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem. The distances between the individual stations likewise correspond to those in Jerusalem. This statement is deliberately approximate; it describes a traditional comparison rather than an exact measurement. For visitors who wish to combine culture and exercise, this creates a different experience from that of a single building: the religious connection is perceived along a path and across several stations.

A chapel also stands on Stráž Hill, whose present form dates from 1935. However, its history goes back further. Construction of the chapel began in 1901 at the site where a Marian apparition is said to have occurred in 1893. This cautious wording is part of the site's tradition and should be retained when considering its history. A small annual pilgrimage with a Holy Mass takes place at the chapel in Stráž during Pentecost. In addition to the event on 15 August, Pyšel therefore offers another clearly defined religious occasion during the year.
