Hrotovice amid its castle, museums and countryside

Hrotovice combines cultural and historical landmarks with an educational trail and unusual museum topics. Particularly striking is the Calvary group: Three stone crosses stand opposite Hrotovice Castle at the intersection of Zákostelní and Znojemská streets. In the third quarter of 2020, the group was declared a cultural monument. The castle itself has been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic since 1968. It stands on medieval foundations and displays late Renaissance and Baroque building phases.

Cultural monuments with different stories

The Church of St. Lawrence also tells the story of several eras. Originally Romanesque, it was rebuilt in the Gothic style in the mid-14th century and altered in the Baroque style in the second half of the 17th century. This makes it possible to trace, through a single building, how architecture in Hrotovice changed over the centuries.

This historical picture is complemented by Baroque sculptures. The statue of Saint Donatus is a work made of fine-grained sandstone, created around 1730 by an unknown artist. The statue of Saint Francis of Paola was created as an anonymous Baroque work in the first half of the 18th century. It belongs to an ensemble of Baroque sculptures created in Hrotovice under the Lords of Hirzenau of Hagendorf. Another special feature is the life-size statue of Saint Florian near Hrotovice. The Baroque sculpture made of shell limestone stands among mature trees in the middle of fields southeast of the town.

Museums for curious explorers

The Muzeum Hrotovicka is designed to be interactive and educational, and is aimed primarily at families with children. The Muzeum mobilních telefonů offers a completely different approach to the history of technology. It grew out of an idea developed in 2019 to show the public a private collection of old mobile phones. The exhibits include suitcase-like mobile phones that were more reminiscent of landline telephones and weighed up to around 5 kg. They are contrasted with later, compact successors. This makes the technological and chronological changes tangible not in the abstract, but through clearly different devices.

The Hrotovicko Educational Trail

For an exploration of the landscape, there is the Hrotovicko Educational Trail. The closed loop trail is 5 km long and includes sixteen stops. Information boards provide interesting facts about animals, trees and flowering plants in the forest, as well as about the geomorphological development of the area. Here, geomorphological development describes the formation and shaping of the terrain in this area. The trail is suitable for pedestrians, cyclists, pushchairs and wheelchair users. This makes the experience distinctly different from the cultural and historical stops: The focus here is on observing nature, landscape development and communicating knowledge in an accessible way.
