Budkov combines a striking castle complex with an open landscape. The village lies in a broad basin where the Bíhanka rises. To the north, east and west, the Markvartická pahorkatina hills rise up. This gives Budkov an appealing contrast of history, waterscapes and far-reaching views – a good basis for a trip in which you would like to combine culture with outdoor exploration.

Castle and park as the centre of the village

On the southern edge of the municipality lies the listed Budkov castle complex with an extensive park. The castle was originally a moated castle. It was later converted into a single-nave Renaissance castle with four wings arranged around an enclosed courtyard. The east wing is complemented by a prismatic, inhabited entrance tower. This building history makes Budkov especially interesting for travellers who would like to discover not only the landscape but also historic architecture when staying at accommodation in the Czech Republic.

The castle park contains a pond with an island and artificial waterways. These water features thus take up a motif that already suited the original character of the complex. If you are travelling with your family, you can take your time to look at such details and add variety to your stay through your own discoveries between castle history and parkland.

History and sacred traces

The first written references to Budkov date from 1353. Jan z Budkova is named as the first owner. Kostel sv. Martina offers another architectural detail: in front of the western main portal there is an access staircase with seven stone steps and a low parapet wall. It is decorated with Baroque sculptures of Saint John of Nepomuk and Saint John Sarkander.

On the fourth Sunday of Advent, a recurring pilgrimage leads from Budkov to Farářova kaplička; this tradition has existed for 24 years. The chapel is a small sacred building near a forest. According to a legend, it is connected with the place where a priest froze to death. For visitors who would like to learn about regional traditions and religious buildings, this custom opens up a special temporal perspective on the village. If you would like to plan your trip around this pilgrimage, you should take the fourth Sunday of Advent into account when making your plans.

Landscape for walks and cycle rides

The hills around Budkov shape the character of the surrounding area. In good visibility, the view extends as far as Kahlenberg and Leopoldsberg near Vienna in Austria. The Jihlava–Třebíč–Raabs cycle path runs through Budkov and adds an opportunity to include the village in a longer cycle tour alongside its cultural attractions. This does not imply any information about duration, difficulty or individual stages. Nevertheless, when choosing accommodation, it may be useful to distinguish between a stay focused on the castle and history and a trip with a stronger emphasis on landscape and cycling.

The first written records, the Renaissance castle, the park with its waterways and the pilgrimage to Farářova kaplička together create a varied picture of Budkov. If you are looking for a historic destination in a hilly landscape, you can specifically search for a suitable hotel here and plan your excursions according to your preferred areas of focus.
