Víska – Doubrava Valley, Culture and Cycle Route No. 1

Víska lies in the foothills of the Železné hory and in the Doubrava Valley. The village combines a clearly defined landscape setting with small cultural and historical discoveries and a designated cycle route. This creates a destination where nature, waterways, local history and active exploration can be experienced together within a compact thematic area.

Location between the Doubrava and the Železné hory

Víska lies on the road between Nová Ves u Chotěboře and Maleč. The Novoveský potok stream flows through the built-up area from west to east. This stream is also a left-bank tributary of the Doubrava. At the eastern edge of Víska, the Blatnický potok stream also flows into the Doubrava from the right. Several waterways therefore define the village’s precise geographical setting, without reducing Víska to a single body of water.

There are several ponds near Víska. Among the several ponds near Víska, Společny is designated as the “most significant pond.” In the surrounding area, a nature trail runs through the entire valley of the Údolí Doubravy Nature Reserve. The Novoveský potok brings flowing water into the village, while the several ponds form standing bodies of water around Víska.

Small monuments with a specific connection to the village

The Víska war memorial stands in the square in front of the municipal office. The lower plaque commemorates those who fell in the Second World War from 1939 to 1945. Another detail is located directly in front of the municipal office: a stone cross dating from 1879 has been preserved in a small park. A memorial to those who fell in the First and Second World Wars stands nearby.

The school building is also one of the village’s noteworthy features. It is decorated with a statue of Jan Amos Komenský. František Šumpich, who was born in Víska u Chotěboře in 1913, provides a personal connection to the culture of remembrance. His name is among those of victims commemorated on war memorials in their respective hometowns, including Víska.

Rouzeň and Cycle Route No. 1

The 452 m-high Rouzeň hill lies southwest of Víska and can be reached on foot. The hill contains abandoned marl quarries. This specific landscape feature adds a geological detail to the waterways and the Doubrava Valley.

Cycle Route No. 1 passes through Víska.
