Veselý Žďár – Monuments, Chapel and Village Traditions

Veselý Žďár is a locality whose character is shaped by historic memorial sites, a distinctive chapel, green spaces and traditional community events. The Freedom Monument was unveiled in memory of the liberation on 28 October 1919 on the village green by the pond, in front of Mr Kubáta’s inn. It was made from a broken granite block, which the local stonemason Jan Krupička, house number 86, carved into a monument. During the Second World War, the Freedom Monument had to be removed and dismantled on the orders of the gendarmerie. It was stored at Karel Pecha’s house, number 82, before being re-erected on 28 October 1946 at 2 p.m. The stone therefore tells not only of liberation, but also of its temporary disappearance and return.

A second memorial site is dedicated to those who fell in the First World War. This monument was reconstructed in 2001 based on a design by Ing. arch. Voigstová. Chapel, Trees and a Special Natural Feature

The Chapel of Saint Wenceslas stands beneath the crowns of four lime trees. The green character of the locality also includes an arboretum on the site of the former poplars and a shelter in the school garden. A white-tailed eagle also breeds in the cadastral area of Veselý Žďár.
