Úsobí – Castle, Trails and Unique Local History

Úsobí combines an accessible castle complex, ecclesiastical history, musical traditions and trails through the rural surroundings. The contrast between events in the town and small discoveries in the countryside is particularly interesting: a paved path leads to the ruins of the chapel south of Úsobí; the viewpoint above Úsobí and the remarkable sycamore maple are located along the route between St. Anne’s Chapel and Úsobí. Trails, Chapels and Landscape around Úsobí

A specific point of reference is the route from Radňov to Větrný Jeníkov. It is 14 kilometres long in total; a section of about four kilometres runs between St. Anne’s Chapel and the viewpoint above Úsobí. The blue-marked hiking trail from Radňov to Úsobí largely follows the course of the Úsobský potok stream. This makes it possible to follow the route not only by the place names but also by the course of the stream.

St. Anne’s Chapel lies between Úsobí and Chválkov and comes alive every year in the middle of the summer holidays with the Svatoanenská pouť pilgrimage. Another destination is the ruin of the Baroque Chapel of the Guardian Angels. It was built in 1715, closed in 1783 as part of the Josephine reforms and gradually fell into its present ruined state. From there, views extend across the surrounding area; there is also a covered tourist rest area beside it.

The ruins lie about one kilometre south of the centre of Úsobí. A paved path leads to them. Vehicles can be parked at the beginning of this path by the cemetery. Along the route between St. Anne’s Chapel and Úsobí, there is also a remarkable sycamore maple by the Kukačka forester’s lodge: it consists of seven fused trunks. Thus, in addition to the route itself, this section offers an unusual natural feature.

Castle, Church and Musical Events

The parish church of St. Peter and Paul the Apostles stands in the town. Its patronal feast is also reflected in the Úsobská muzikantská pouť. This event takes place every year on the weekend closest to the feast of Saints Peter and Paul. Three further musical events form part of Úsobské hudební léto: the programme comprises three concerts held in the early evening on the three Sundays following the Úsobská muzikantská pouť.

Úsobí Castle is currently open to everyone interested in its history, distinctive rooms and unusual chambers. Panský rybník pond lies directly by the castle. Fishing is possible there; a permit can be arranged through the castle.

Historical Traces in the Town

The former glassworks are also part of Úsobí’s history. At first, potash glass was produced there, and later lead crystal was cut. This craft tradition adds another chapter of local history to the visible architectural and landscape attractions.
