Sloupno – Landscape, Cycling Routes and Local Landmarks

Sloupno combines the landscape of the Iron Mountains with several distinctive cycling routes and small, noteworthy local landmarks. The village lies in the Železné hory Protected Landscape Area and is therefore a suitable base for a trip in which nature, activity and regional features stand closely side by side. Those seeking not just a single attraction but the character of a place will find different points of interest in Sloupno.

Landscape between Železné hory and Vestec

The Železné hory area around Sloupno belongs to the Trhovokamenická vrchovina, whose dominant mountain is Vestec. At 668 metres, Vestec is also the highest point in the Železné hory area. The combination of protected landscape, hilly terrain and a distinctive elevated point shapes the surrounding landscape.

Three cycling routes with different profiles

Several cycling routes pass through Sloupno. The Ždírec nad Doubravou–Havlíčkova Borová–Bílek–Štěpánov–Ždírec nad Doubravou route passes through Sloupno. The Chotěboř–Havlíčkova Borová–Krucemburk–Podmoklany–Chotěboř route also passes through Sloupno. Both routes pass through several places and thus go beyond a short local circuit.

Another route runs via Ždírec nad Doubravou–Sloupno–Veselý kopec–Radostín–Ždírec nad Doubravou. It is difficult and hilly, runs mainly on roads and is expressly intended for road and trekking bikes. Its more demanding, road-oriented profile therefore takes centre stage. The route connects Sloupno with Veselý kopec and Radostín.

Local landmarks with their own character

In addition to its landscape and cycling routes, Sloupno has several individual features that make the village distinctive. A stone statue by the roadside is a landmark of Sloupno. The village also has a restored bell tower. Both elements represent specific discoveries directly within the village landscape, without needing to be grouped into a larger site or comprehensive complex of sights.

In 2005, the Štikovská lípa received the title “Hero Tree” in the nationwide “Tree of the Year” competition.

Sloupno also has a cast-iron cross. The stone statue, bell tower and cast-iron cross are individual features with different backgrounds. For a trip catering to different interests, this offers a different form of discovery than a single large attraction.

An active quarry near Štikov

The Sloupno quarry near the village of Štikov is part of the area’s geological character. The quarry is active and extracts metadiorites, metagranitoids, amphibolites and metagabbros of the Iron Mountains Pluton. No specific access or sightseeing opportunity can be inferred for visitors from this. The term pluton refers to a body of magma that solidified underground and describes the geological setting of the quarry.
