Historic Skuhrov around St. Nicholas

Skuhrov combines a remarkable local history with visible evidence from several centuries. The first written mention dates back to 1352. Even then, Skuhrov was a thriving settlement with a church and its own parish. For visitors, a particularly vivid part of this history is concentrated in the centre: St. Nicholas Church stands on a small hill and is surrounded by a cemetery.

Church, Chapel and Baroque Details

St. Nicholas was originally built as a Gothic church in the first half of the 14th century. The church tower was added in 1811 in the Empire style. A walled-up Gothic portal has also been preserved on the southern wall of the nave. The church has been a protected monument since 1963. Inside, there is a statue of the suffering Christ from the mid-18th century and a stone baptismal font dating from around 1700. The building therefore offers not just a single historical point of reference, but combines different periods within a clearly defined local area.

The church complex also includes the cemetery with a rectangular Baroque mortuary chapel, built between 1707 and 1712. Skuhrov's Baroque rectory was built in 1728 by V. Smekly. Mass is held at St. Nicholas Church twice a week and additionally on public holidays. Another attraction lies on the road to Havlíčkův Brod: the rectangular Chapel of St. Florian was built in 1783. Its façade is articulated by pilasters supporting a cornice and a semicircular gable. In front of the gate of house no. 64 there is also a granite cross with bevelled edges. According to local tradition, it is one of the crosses that once lined the Haberská trade route. This historical classification is explicitly a local tradition and supplements the visible local history with a handed-down connection to the former road.

Hiking and Orientation in the Area

A yellow-marked hiking trail from Lipnice nad Sázavou to Lysá passes through Skuhrov.
