Přibyslav: History, Museums and Cycle Paths

Přibyslav combines an impressive history with unusual places to visit and clearly defined cycling routes. The Gothic tower, protected cultural monuments, two very different museums and a cycle path along a former railway line give your stay several distinct focal points. This allows you to combine culture with active days without losing sight of the town’s special features.

Historic buildings with different visiting hours

Přibyslav Castle is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. The Gothic tower of Přibyslav is another particularly striking landmark. Construction began in 1497 after the original tower was badly damaged during the Hussite siege. Its massive walls indicate that it was built as a defensive tower. The tower is regularly open to visitors from the beginning of July to the end of August.

Different opening arrangements apply to the Narození sv. Jana Křtitele parish church. Its foundation stone was laid on 1 April 1750; it was completed three years later and ceremonially consecrated on 24 July 1753. Outside of services, the church is open to the public by prior arrangement. Anyone planning to visit several historic sites should take these differing access arrangements into account.

Štola pod farou, a medieval tunnel in Přibyslav, is a special addition to the town’s history. The tunnel is about 80 metres long; including its side passages, it reaches approximately 118 metres. It is accessible exclusively during the Přibyslav festivities in September. In addition to cultural visits that are possible on a regular basis, Přibyslav therefore offers a historic experience tied to a specific period.

Museums covering local history and firefighting

Since 2005, the Starý ženský špitál Přibyslav has housed the town museum and the tourist information centre. The idea for establishing the Městské muzeum Přibyslav emerged towards the end of the 19th century. Around 1,200 objects were collected for the early collection in a relatively short time. These include traditional costumes, tools, weapons, ceramic vessels, coins, old books and other documents. The selection therefore conveys various aspects of everyday life in the past and of the region’s heritage.

The Hasičské muzeum Přibyslav focuses on a different subject. Its permanent exhibition on the history of fire protection covers 15 halls and presents early firefighting methods, the development of fire brigades since the mid-19th century, firefighting uniforms, and historical and modern equipment. One hall is dedicated to international cooperation among CTIF countries and contains firefighting uniforms from various countries. The regional exhibition Přibyslavsko is called Žižkova síň and presents archaeology, replicas of Hussite weapons, traditional costumes and everyday objects.

Cycling and hiking around Přibyslav

For active days, Přibyslav railway station is an important point of reference. It is located on railway line No. 250 between Brno and Havlíčkův Brod. The Česko-Moravská cycle route No. 16 also passes through Přibyslav. The Přibyslav–Sázava cycle path starts directly at the station and follows a former railway line. The route is nine kilometres long and has no significant climbs. This makes it easy to include as a clearly defined cycling excursion in your itinerary.

There is also plenty of choice on foot: the K.-H.-Borovský Trail is one of the well-marked hiking routes in the area around Přibyslav. The Cyril-and-Methodius Route can be completed on foot or by bicycle in stages. Depending on your preferred pace, you can choose between short, manageable cycling trips, a multi-stage route or a hiking day with a stronger regional focus.
