Podmoky – Ponds, Hiking Trail and Historical Traces

Podmoky combines a gently rolling landscape with ponds, a marked hiking trail and an unusual number of traces of the village’s history. The village lies on the border between the Vysočina Region and the Central Bohemian Region, near Golčův Jeníkov. This makes it a destination where nature observation, historical discoveries and a visit to a family farm can be combined.

Ponds, Stream and Hiking Trail

The cadastral area of Podmoky includes the three larger ponds Starý, Nový and Rousínov. Two of these three ponds are suitable for swimming, without this referring to any specific bathing spot or access point. Rousínov lies near a mill and is privately owned. There are cabins on its dam where summer camps are held. Fishing in fishing area 451 099 Nový rybník is prohibited until further notice due to fish mortality.

The Brslenka stream is formed by the upper course of the Čáslavka and the Hluboký potok and flows into the Doubrava. Those who want to explore the village on foot can follow a marked hiking trail that runs from Golčův Jeníkov–město railway station in the direction of Tisí skála and onwards to Horky railway station.

Castle, Churches and Medieval Finds

A notable cultural landmark is Hrádek u Podmok. Well-preserved remains of a small castle survive there on a spur above a stream. The site is dated to the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. However, the history of the village goes back even further: the first written mention of Podmoky dates from 1360. At that time, Podmoky belonged to the Golčův Jeníkov estate.

The past becomes particularly tangible through the finds discovered in the village. During excavation work for the foundation of a barn, coins from the time of Václav II were discovered at house number 82 in 1912. Bracteates, called “braktáče” in Czech, were also found in Podmoky. These coins date from the time of Přemysl Otakar II and were minted between 1193 and 1278. Another visible historical reference is the Church of the Filial Parish of the Name of the Virgin Mary in Podmoky, built in 1908 and restored in 1981. The brick bell tower, built in 1835, also remains in its original location.

Experiences for Different Interests

At the U Hajdúchů family farm, visitors can get to know and pet Huacaya alpacas up close. The visitor enclosures are also home to goats, Kunekune pigs, Belgian Giant rabbits, as well as waterfowl and poultry. Those traveling with children will find a hands-on animal experience here to complement the village’s historical and landscape attractions. The farm also produces and sells honey from its own beehives.

For arriving by car, the connection to the I/38 main road is key. At the beginning of the Golčův Jeníkov bypass, turn right when traveling from Čáslav and follow a local road for approximately 2.5 km to Podmoky. This approximate distance refers to the approach to the village, not a route to any individual attraction.
