Velké Janovice between a stream, cultural landscape and rare plant species

Velké Janovice stretches along both banks of the Janovický stream. The stream rises in the forests above Velké Janovice, while the Údolí Janovického potoka area lies west of the village. Rare and highly endangered plant species survive there, having largely disappeared from the surrounding landscape. These plants provide a livelihood for several rarer insect species. The area was registered as a significant landscape feature on 14 October 2005. For the area’s continued management, the continuation of gentle grazing or the mowing of the grasslands at suitable times is envisaged. This maintenance concerns the grasslands of the area located to the west. Thus, the landscape includes both the wooded source area above the village and the grasslands in the valley to the west.

Chapel, pilgrimage, mill and historic traces in Velké Janovice

The Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows has stood in Velké Janovice since 1892. It was last renovated in 2009 and continues to serve religious purposes. A large cross dating from 1863, which has been preserved, stands in the immediate vicinity. The cross is therefore 29 years older than the chapel. A traditional pilgrimage also takes place in Velké Janovice in August. The chapel, cross and pilgrimage connect fixed religious sites with an annually recurring event in Velké Janovice.

Further historic traces are connected with the former mill. The mill was taken out of operation in 1939, but its original building and mechanism have been preserved. The buildings of Panský dvůr are also still standing today. The mill thus preserves both its structural components and its mechanism, even though its operation ended as early as the 20th century.

The Poustevna hermitage was blessed on 23 July 2005 by Vojtěch Cikrle, the thirteenth Bishop of Brno, and belongs to the Dalečín parish.

Cycling routes with different road surfaces near Velké Janovice

There are two specific route connections for active days. The “Za sportem” route is 58 kilometres long and passes through Velké Janovice. It runs along asphalted roads, paved roads and field tracks. Different road surfaces therefore alternate along this route, so the route is not limited to a single type of surface. The Jimramovská Circuit of Zubří stezky 8 reaches Velké Janovice at kilometre 17. For “Za sportem”, the focus is therefore on the total length and the three types of route, while for the Jimramovská Circuit it is on the specific kilometre point of the village. Both routes place Velké Janovice within a broader cycling-route context, but with different information about their course.
