Nížkov combines impressive ecclesiastical history with cycle routes and distinctive natural attractions. Those looking for accommodation in Nížkov will find starting points here for many different kinds of holiday days: historical details at St. Nicholas Church, a 21.5-kilometre cycling loop, routes through the municipal area and a natural formation on the Sázava.

Church, Ossuary and Traces of Centuries Past

The history of the village centres on the Church of St. Nicholas. It was built around 1245 in the Early Gothic style on the site of a wooden church. In 1753–1754, it was remodelled in the Baroque and Neoclassical styles, with a Baroque nave added at that time. Inside is a wooden Renaissance baptismal font dating from around 1600.

Next to the west façade of St. Nicholas Church stands the Nížkov ossuary, dating from 1709. It contains four stacks of skulls and bones from almost 8,000 people. The scientific dating of individual remains also makes the site historically remarkable: examinations of seven samples showed that six date from the Middle Ages, including the 13th century and the period from 1307 to 1363. Nížkov therefore offers not just a single historic monument, but several different chronological layers that come together as you explore the village.

Cycle Routes with Different Highlights

For active days, the municipal excursion recommendation “Rozhledna Rosička – cyklo-stezka 19 – bukové arboretum” is available. The 21.5-kilometre cycling loop starts in Nížkov, passes through Rosička, Sázava, Ronov, Olešenka and Buková, and then returns to Nížkov. A prominent point along the route is the 645-metre-high Rosičský kopec, where a lookout tower stands.

Another point of reference is cycle route 4336 Dobronín–Nížkov–Sázava. It runs through the cadastral territory of the municipality of Nížkov and connects Dobronín, Nížkov and Sázava. The publication “Okolím Nížkova na kole a pěšky”, featuring excursion tips around Nížkov on foot and by bicycle, is available at the municipal office. When planning accommodation, these two options can suit different interests: a fixed circular route or a connection between several places.

Landscape along the Sázava and Small Monuments

Natural attractions include Žlutá skála, a natural formation on the left bank of the Sázava, about 1.5 kilometres upstream from Nížkov railway station. The stone bridge over the Nížkovský potok also adds a historic accent. It lies 100 metres below the village square in the direction of Polná and was built in 1889.

In the village and its immediate surroundings, you will encounter further evidence of regional history: a statue of St. John of Nepomuk from 1869 stands in front of the old Nížkov parish house. Several stone crosses stand in the surrounding area, dating predominantly from the 18th and 19th centuries. On the road to Sázava, there is a wayside shrine from 1748, regarded as an example of vernacular Baroque. A similar wayside shrine had stood in Nížkov since 1741; today, a marble cross stands on the original base of the destroyed shrine.

The Červený mlýn is also located nearby, with a functioning water turbine for generating electricity. Such individual attractions complement the larger routes with brief opportunities for historical and technical discoveries.

Choose Accommodation Based on Your Ideal Holiday Day

When searching for a hotel or other accommodation in Nížkov, you can therefore choose how much emphasis to place on culture, cycling and landscape. St. Nicholas Church, with its ossuary and preserved interior details, represents a stay shaped by cultural history. The cycling loop via Rosička, Sázava, Ronov, Olešenka and Buková focuses on a more active day trip, while Žlutá skála and the bridge over the Nížkovský potok provide further specific destinations connected with the landscape and watercourse.

For further orientation within the broader selection, you will also find Bohuňov, Strážek, Zvole, Nové Sady, Skrdlovice, Moravecké Pavlovice, Cikháj and Sejřek.
