Matějov combines impressive wetlands with small, clearly identifiable cultural monuments. The landscape is centered around Matějovský rybník and Babínský rybník ponds. In addition, there are the Jména Panny Marie Chapel and the early Baroque Boží muka column shrine. If you are looking for a place for your trip that offers nature observation, marsh landscapes and manageable cultural discoveries, Matějov provides several different points of interest.

Ponds, Marsh Meadows and Special Plants

Matějovský rybník pond is located in the municipality and cadastral area of Matějov. Its surroundings are characterized by wetlands and marshy meadows where species-rich sedge stands grow. These meadows are also home to bogbean (Menyanthes trifoliata) and hare's-tail cottongrass (Eriophorum vaginatum). The pond is therefore interesting not only as a body of water, but also because of the distinctive plant life in its immediate surroundings.

A different expression of the landscape can be seen at Babínský rybník pond. It is also located in the cadastral area of Matějov, has a water surface of 8.3 hectares and lies in the headwaters of the Oslava. Sedges, bulrushes, cottongrasses and peat mosses grow along its banks. The pond's water is acidic and peat-stained. Compared with Matějovský rybník pond, the characteristics of a peat-influenced body of water are therefore particularly pronounced here.

The Babín Nature Trail and the Nature of the Žďárské vrchy

The Babín Nature Trail passes through the best-preserved natural areas of the Žďárské vrchy. It explains to visitors the special role of forests, marshes, wetlands and ponds in nature. For your excursion planning, this provides a thematic complement to the individual bodies of water: the trail places the various landscape forms in a broader context and makes it clear how differently these habitats are shaped.

Chapel and Early Baroque Wayside Shrine

The architectural history of Matějov can also be traced through specific years. Construction of the Jména Panny Marie Chapel in Matějov began in 1907 according to plans by builder Josef Křelina from Zámek Žďár. The chapel's furnishings were completed in 1910; it was consecrated in the same year. Those who wish to discover the local architectural history alongside the landscape will find a clearly dated stop here.

Another cultural landmark stands on the outskirts of Matějov, on the road to Nové Veselí: the early Baroque stone Boží muka column shrine. It is crowned by a four-sided chapel with niches. Together with the Jména Panny Marie Chapel, the shrine shows a different side of the village from its ponds and marsh meadows. In Matějov, you can thus combine natural features and historic small monuments without either theme completely defining the character of the place.
