Vlčí Hora: Views, Trails and Regional Discoveries

Vlčí Hora combines a distinctive landscape with trails, views, regional culture and herbal traditions. The 581-metre-high, forested basalt hill rises at the northern edge of the settlement of the same name. This brings together a clearly recognisable natural landmark and several different ways to spend your days in the landscape of Bohemian Switzerland.

Around the Summit, Lookout Tower and Springs

A yellow-marked hiking trail leads directly from Vlčí Hora to the summit and its lookout tower. A red-marked trail leads around Vlčí Hora and onwards to the Verunčiny studánky springs, which lie about 400 metres below the summit. You can therefore choose between a direct route to the high point and a route that circles the mountain and includes the springs. The lookout tower itself was ceremonially opened on 19 May 1889. The two marked routes therefore offer different focuses for planning your day: the direct ascent concentrates on the high point, while the circuit includes the spring site below the summit.

The Köglerova Educational Trail

For a more extensive hike, the Köglerova Educational Trail is an ideal destination in its own right. The 23-kilometre circular route begins in Krásná Lípa and can be walked in either direction. Along the route, 39 stations provide information about the individual sites in Czech and German. The Köglerova Educational Trail was opened in 1941 and reopened in reconstructed form in 2006. For planning purposes, the key distinction is therefore between the shorter trails around Vlčí Hora and the long circular route starting in Krásná Lípa. At 23 kilometres, this circuit is an independent hiking destination, and its length should be considered as a separate focus when planning your day. The stations divide the route into thematic sections and connect the hike with the individual places along the way.

Architecture and Rural Cultural Heritage

The Dlouhý Důl rural conservation area is part of the region’s distinctive character. It includes Dlouhý Důl, Kyjov, Sněžná and Vlčí Hora. Almost all of the buildings form a largely intact, cohesive ensemble consisting predominantly of timbered Upper Lusatian house structures. The settlements therefore tell not only of the landscape, but also of a preserved rural architectural tradition.

Herb Garden and Svatojánské slavnosti bylin

Below Vlčí Hora, the garden of the Nobilis Tilia visitor centre is open all year round. There, you can learn about permaculture and biodynamics. The herbal tea room serves herbal teas, freshly ground coffee and organic treats from local suppliers. The Svatojánské slavnosti bylin provide a seasonal cultural highlight; since 2004, this summer and Midsummer festival has been held every year in the Bohemian Switzerland landscape at Vlčí Hora. The festival includes workshops, music and food.
