Srbská Kamenice – Nature, History and Trails in the Kamenice Valley

Srbská Kamenice lies in the valley of the Kamenice River and brings together landscapes, hiking trails and tangible history within a small area. The town is a starting point for visits to České Švýcarsko National Park as well as the Labské pískovce, České středohoří and Lužické hory protected landscape areas. This makes it possible to combine a stay with nature experiences and cultural discoveries without limiting yourself to just one type of travel. The river landscape, protected areas and historical sites offer different opportunities for observing nature, outdoor activities and discovering local history.

Valley, Wetland and Trails through the Landscape

The Arba Nature Reserve is part of the character of the Kamenice Valley. It is a large meadow in the valley along the Kamenice River. Plants and animals associated with meadows and spring areas are protected there; at the same time, Arba is one of the region’s most important wetlands. The combination of the river, a large meadow and spring areas gives this natural site a distinctive focus within the landscape. To reach it, you can use bus connections from Děčín and Česká Kamenice, as well as a train connection from Veselé pod Rabštejnem railway station.

Hiking Destinations with History

Dolský mlýn was first mentioned in writing in 1515. Today, the historic mill can be reached from Srbská Kamenice via a green-marked hiking trail. Depending on your fitness level, there are several options for returning to the town. The history of the destination extends beyond its first written mention: especially after 1881, when boat traffic began in the gorge between Srbská Kamenice and Dolský mlýn, Dolský mlýn became a popular excursion destination. The trail is therefore suitable for a tour combining a historic destination with exercise through the gorge.

Fortifications and Museum

In 1937–1938, a line of light fortifications was built in Srbská Kamenice to defend the republic against Nazi Germany. It comprises numerous reinforced-concrete bunkers popularly known as “Řopíky”. The line can be reached from the U Ferdinanda bus stop in Srbská Kamenice via a blue-marked hiking trail. At the Museum of the Fortifications of Northern Bohemia, you can learn about the construction of the fortifications and the equipment of the bunkers; examples of the Czechoslovak Army’s weaponry are also on display. This section thus combines a route through the landscape with a visit bringing together construction, equipment and armament.

Church, Townscape and Music

The present-day Church of Saint Wenceslas in Srbská Kamenice was built between 1772 and 1776; the foundation stone was laid on 15 July 1772. The church contains a valuable Rococo altar. A relief depicting the Coronation of the Virgin Mary, dating from 1701, is carved into the rock face along the road below the church. Traditional Upper Lusatian-style half-timbered houses document the original development of Srbská Kamenice. The townscape thus combines sacred art, historic residential houses and a cultural focus in late summer. Since 1995, music festivals with an extensive programme have been held in August and September.
