Baroque History in the Townscape

The Baroque Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary is one of Lobendava’s defining landmarks and was built between 1709 and 1712. After the fire of 1790, its Baroque appearance was preserved during the restoration. On Annaberg stands the protected Baroque Chapel of Saint Anne, built between 1775 and 1777 for a Late Gothic statue of Saint Anne.

Stations of the Cross and Chapels

The Stations of the Cross on Anenský vrch consist of fourteen stations. Thirteen of them are designed as niche chapels, while the fourteenth is the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre. The pilgrimage complex also includes an enclosed Garden of Gethsemane with statues integrated into the landscape. The Chapel of Saint Joachim stands on the summit of the hill of the same name, about 2 kilometres northeast of Lobendava; stations of a Way of the Cross surround it. The complex was fully restored in 2017. A pilgrimage site in Lobendava becomes a destination for pilgrims every year on the Sunday closest to 26 July.

Historic Routes and Active Trails

Lobendava lies along the historic “Kaiserstraße”, also known as the “Dresdner Straße”, which was originally built as an important connection between Vienna and Dresden. A hiking route begins in the town centre at a junction of the green and blue trails and follows the green trail 2 kilometres north to Severní. A cycling route leads through the Severní district to Lobendava and onward to the Lobendava–Langburkersdorf border crossing. This allows local history and signposted routes to be incorporated into your own daily itinerary.

Further Historic Discoveries

The protected Hilgersdorfský Mill, a former Neoclassical mill complex from the early 19th century, is located in the Severní district. Lobendava is also home to a protected Baroque statue of Saint John of Nepomuk from 1746, standing on a two-storey triangular pedestal. Reliefs depict scenes from the saint’s life, including his fall from the bridge, his torture, and the queen’s confession.
