Jiříkov: Baroque Heritage, Pilgrimage and Cycling Tour

Jiříkov brings together several clearly identifiable themes for trip planning: five bilingual educational trails run through Jiříkov, connecting the town’s history with its present. There are also Baroque buildings and works of art, the pilgrimage site in Filipov, walks along the borders of protected landscapes and a 54-kilometre cycling loop. Baroque Heritage and Protected Buildings

The Baroque heritage can be seen in several details. The interior of St. George’s Church in Jiříkov is decorated in the Baroque style. Jiříkov is also home to a Baroque sculptural group of Saint Charles Borromeo, Saint John of Nepomuk and Saint Florian, dating from 1769. The Baroque rectory was built in 1777 and has been a protected monument since 4 April 1966.

Smaller buildings also tell the story of the town. The house was built in 1771; a statue of Christ was placed in its garden in 1860. Four houses built in the 18th century in the vernacular architectural style are among Jiříkov’s state-protected immovable monuments. The grounds of St. George’s Church include a Baroque mortuary chapel dating from around 1729. It stands on the south-eastern edge of the church grounds, next to the cemetery, and forms part of the enclosing wall. On the Jiříkovský potok stream stands an ensemble consisting of a rural house and a shed dating from around the mid-19th century.

Filipov: Basilica and Pilgrimage

Filipov, a district of Jiříkov, adds a distinctive religious history. The basilica in Filipov was built between 1873 and 1885 as a monumental single-nave Neo-Romanesque church with two towers on the façade. The annual pilgrimage Mass held in the early morning in January attracts hundreds of worshippers from the Czech Republic, Germany and Slovakia. The pilgrimage tradition in Filipov began after a Marian apparition on 13 January 1866 and the subsequent healing of Magdaléna; people then began making pilgrimages to the shrine.

Hiking and Cycling around Jiříkov

Jiříkov is one of the municipalities located on the borders of the Labské pískovce Protected Landscape Area and Bohemian Switzerland National Park, making it suitable for hiking. For cyclists, the 54-kilometre Tour de Zeleňák cycling loop passes through Jiříkov. It can also be ridden outside the annual race on a road bike, gravel bike or e-bike. The route length and the different types of bicycles provide a concrete framework for your own planning without tying the loop to the annual race.
