Mining History at the Foot of the Lužické hory

Jiřetín pod Jedlovou combines the history of a mining town with the landscape of the western part of the Lužické hory Protected Landscape Area. The town was founded in 1548 following the discovery of silver ore deposits. Most of Jiřetín pod Jedlovou has been designated an urban conservation area since 1992 – an exciting starting point if you would like to combine a historic atmosphere with experiences in nature.

Conservation Area, Churches and Castle Ruins

The historic buildings include the Church of the Holy Trinity, which was consecrated in 1612. Most of its furnishings date from the 18th century. The 1755 rectory features a villa-style architectural design with a mansard roof. On Křížová hora, the historic complex includes the Chapel of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre; it has been protected as a cultural monument since 1969.

Tolštejn is the ruin of a medieval castle first mentioned in 1337. It was built to protect the route from Bohemia to Lusatia. The Jiřetín Mining Museum devotes part of its exhibition to the history of mining in Jiřetín pod Jedlovou and the surrounding area. The museum is currently closed to the public for technical reasons. The museum also includes the St. John the Evangelist adit, which is open annually from June; the museum exhibition also includes the “Hornická naučná stezka Údolí Milířky” mining educational trail.

Jedlová: Views, Winter Activities and Regional Cuisine

In clear weather, Jedlová offers a panoramic view stretching from the Ore Mountains to the Krkonoše Mountains. A 23-metre-high stone lookout tower was built on the mountain in 1891. The Jedlová Rope Course is located at the summit next to the lookout tower. A ski lift leads to Jedlová; the area around the mountain also has cross-country ski trails. At the local Jedlová restaurant, you can try a yeast dumpling with blueberries as a regional speciality.

Routes and Activities for Different Types of Days

The sixth stage of the Hřebenovka runs via Krásná Lípa, Horní Podluží, Jiřetín pod Jedlovou, Jedlová and Tolštejn to Jedlová railway station. The fourth stage of the Via Nisa Crucis runs from Jiřetín pod Jedlovou to Hvozd (Hochwald). The 9.4-kilometre “Around Jiřetín pod Jedlovou” route starts in the market square, leads via Křížová hora to Jedlová and Tolštejn, and returns to Jiřetín pod Jedlovou.

At Jedlová, visitors can rent all-terrain scooters and ride one of five routes to the lower lift station. The mountain carts are intended for children and adults. The sports centre in Jiřetín pod Jedlovou offers tennis, football, beach volleyball, mini-golf and a swimming pool. The grounds also include a forest park with a children’s playground, pond, open-air theatre and fire pit.

The Tolštejnské slavnosti festival takes place every year. It celebrates traditions, craftsmanship and medieval life. The Tolštejnské panství tourism project also includes the “Vandrování po Tolštejnském panství” game, with the option of purchasing a mini-pass or pass. The local information centre provides information about events in the municipalities and sells regional products as well as classic souvenirs. This allows you to focus on different priorities when choosing your accommodation: the conservation area and mining history, mountain landscapes and views, or active days with children.
