Discover Dolní Poustevna

Dolní Poustevna combines a multifaceted local history with a gently rolling landscape and distinctive traces along the border. The first mention of the place where the village was later established dates back to 1241. Today, historic churches, a cultural centre, traditional events and paths through changing woodland come together here.

Cultural Monuments and Local History

Near the border crossing stands a Baroque Pietà dating from 1748. It is listed in the Central List of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic. It is therefore one of Dolní Poustevna’s clearly documented historical features, without this implying any particular form of visit.

Another distinctive building is the Church of the Archangel Michael, built in 1854–1855 in the Neo-Gothic style. The Church of the Virgin Mary also dates from 1854. Together with the Pietà, these buildings reflect different phases of the town’s development and give a stay a distinctly cultural and historical dimension.

The former Evangelical church was completely reconstructed in 2009 and serves as the Centrum setkávání. This facility includes a concert and theatre hall as well as an observation tower. Exhibitions, lectures and seminars are held at the Centrum setkávání. This makes the place interesting not only for its historic buildings, but also for its documented programme of events. The older economic history includes the hand papermill, which operated from 1579 to 1906, and the production of artificial flowers. Dolní Poustevna was known for this throughout northern Bohemia and Saxony.

Landscape Between Forest and Basalt

The Dolní Poustevna area is gently rolling, with elevation differences of no more than 300 m. There are no strongly pronounced landscape features, while nature and changing woodland have been preserved. Those looking for a quieter landscape with manageable differences in relief will find a different character here than in highly varied mountainous regions.

A distinctive landscape feature is Poustevník (Špičák), a 454 m-high basalt cone between Horní Poustevna and Nová Ví­ska. Interesting rock formations lie on its slopes; in places, the columnar jointing of the basalt can be seen. This geological accent adds a clear natural detail to the otherwise gently rolling surroundings.

Hiking and Cycling in Different Formats

The traditional Severní stopou hiking event always takes place in Dolní Poustevna in mid-May. Hiking routes ranging from 5 to 25 km are offered. The wide range makes the event suitable for different day plans: you can choose between a shorter and a considerably longer hiking route, without any particular level of difficulty being inferred from the event’s name.

There are also concrete reasons to regard the town as a starting point for active experiences. Cycle route No. 3043 begins at the state border in Dolní Poustevna. In addition, three trail routes leading to Rybářská chata are currently open. A railway line has run to Dolní Poustevna since 1904 and is therefore also part of the town’s long transport and local history.
