Dolní Podluží: Valley, Border and History

Dolní Podluží lies on the northern side of the Lusatian Mountains, in a broad valley by the Lužnička stream. This gives the town several clearly distinguishable themes: landscape, cross-border routes and cultural and historical heritage. For you, this provides an interesting basis for bringing nature, local history and discoveries near the border together in one travel plan, without a single type of excursion having to define the character of your stay.

A distinctive landscape feature is the deeply incised Milířka Valley. It lies between Rohál, Čertova pláň and Kozí hřbet, about 2 km south of Dolní Podluží. The Lusatian Fault runs through the middle part of the valley. It forms the boundary between the Lusatian granite massif to the north and the sandstones of the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin to the south. The landscape here therefore tells not only of elevations and valleys, but also of the transition between two geological units.

Cross-border activities are also part of the townscape. Dolní Podluží has a border crossing to Germany for pedestrians and cyclists. The town can be reached on foot and by bicycle from Großschönau. In addition, a cross-border cycling tour to half-timbered houses leads through Dolní Podluží. Those who would like to discover regional architectural styles while cycling will find a concrete thematic connection here.

The mining educational trail in the Milířka Valley begins and ends about 1 km from the Uhlířská cesta. This route leads from Dolní Podluží to the saddle below Ptačinec. The mining history also includes the Štola U Knížecí studánky, also known as Antoniho štola, which is 208 m long. Both themes complement the landscape with traces of its use and exploration.

Cultural Monuments and Local Distinctive Features

The present-day masonry Church of St Catherine was completed in 1548. It is a prominent landmark of Dolní Podluží and an important part of the local landscape. The crypt also has a distinctive history: the small funerary structure is clearly designed in the Neo-Gothic style, was built in 1893–1894 for Paul Brass, the son of the owner of the local textile factory, and was constructed according to a design by the prominent Viennese architect Viktor Luntz. In 2020, the crypt was added to the list of cultural monuments. In the cemetery of Dolní Podluží, a stone fountain monument also commemorates the 101 inhabitants of Podluží who died on the battlefields of the First World War.

The sights of Dolní Podluží also include a wooden bell tower from the 18th century. It was restored in 2016 and received a new bell in 2018. A contemporary cultural venue is the Bio Luž cinema, which is still in operation and screens films using Sony Digital Cinema 4K and RealD 3D. GALLI DISTILLERY contributes to the local culinary culture as a craft family distillery in Dolní Podluží producing fruit brandies and liqueurs. The regional brand certificate has been awarded to LUŽICKÁ BYLINNÁ, JABLKOVICE, HRUŠKOVICE and RŮŽENÍN.
