Česká Kamenice combines a protected historic townscape with distinctive landscape experiences and various trails. The historic town centre was declared an urban heritage conservation area in 1992. A total of 34 immovable cultural monuments belong to this area. This allows you to focus on different aspects of your trip, including the town’s history, architecture, viewpoints and active excursions.
Architecture and Unique Cultural Sites
The three-nave Gothic interior structure of the Church of St James the Elder, Kostel sv. Jakuba Staršího, combines Rococo, Renaissance and Classicist elements. During a guided tour, you can also climb the 46-metre-high church tower and reach the balcony inside. Another distinctive feature of the townscape is the glass astronomical clock Skleněný orloj in Česká Kamenice. It is set in motion every day on the hour between 08:00 and 21:00.
The pilgrimage chapel Poutní kaple Narození Panny Marie has a circular central structure and is considered an important example of Baroque architecture. Guided tours explain the history and significance of the pilgrimage site. Visitors can see the interior of the central structure as well as the ambulatory with its four corner chapels. The historical diversity also includes the family crypt of the Preidl family, built in 1868 and a valuable example of historicist funerary architecture.
Jehla and Trails for Different Day Plans
The Jehla viewpoint rises above the town. Its summit consists of pointed basalt columns and lies at an altitude of 487 metres. The Via Ferrata Uchem Jehly, a grade C via ferrata route, also leads to Jehla. In addition to walking and hiking trails, this offers a choice of distinctive landscapes and a demanding designated via ferrata as different types of experience.
The Okruh Vyhlídky–Brand circular route starts at Náměstí Míru in the centre of Česká Kamenice and follows the yellow trail markings. It is considered suitable for families with children and older visitors. The first stage of the Výroční stezka I. etapa Česká Kamenice–Prácheň–Češka trail also starts at Náměstí Míru. For an excursion that is easier to access, Mlýnky–Brand is located less than one kilometre from the square. The site is freely accessible year-round and offers small cottages and interactive water features; the route is also suitable for strollers and ride-on vehicles.
Rabštejnské údolí and Practical Orientation
Rabštejnské údolí is suitable for walking, cycling and rollerblading. The tunnels known as Werk C house a publicly accessible exhibition on the history of Rabštejnské údolí. A railway primarily serving passenger traffic still runs through the valley; the historic Sklářská lokálka to Kamenický Šenov also runs there. For excursion planning, the Česká Kamenice Tourist Information Centre provides information about natural and architectural monuments in the town and its surroundings and, if needed, recommends suitable means of transport.
