Vodňany: City History with a Fishing Tradition

Vodňany combines notable cultural sites with a landscape in which ponds and fishing play a visible role. The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is considered the city’s most important landmark; written records about it date back to 1317. The Vodňany City Museum is located in the former synagogue and features an exhibition on the city’s history. This is complemented by the Fishing in the Vodňany Region exhibition. The School Fisheries Museum offers another insight into the local history of fishing, with aquariums displaying live fish and a historical section.

Museums, Gallery and Guided History

The Městská galerie Vodňany presents a permanent exhibition from the legacies of Julius Zeyer, František Herites and Otakar Mokrý. It is complemented by works by Czech artists from around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as drawings by Mikoláš Aleš; temporary exhibitions are also held. The exhibition on the military history of the city, Jan Žižka and Vodňany, is housed in the Městská bašta. If you would like to visit this site, please note that the Městská bašta is accessible only with a guided tour. Literature, visual art and military history create distinct cultural points of focus.

Ponds, Circular Trails and a Taste of the Region

The 3 km Městský rybářský okruh is a circular trail near the city that runs through Vodňany. It connects places directly associated with fishing, including Velká Podvinice pond and the grounds of the Secondary Fisheries School. Along the way, the trail also passes Velká Outrata, Malá Outrata and Malá Podvinice ponds before returning to the starting point. The circular trail can be rounded off with a tasting of carp prepared in the Vodňany style. With its fixed length of 3 km and return to the starting point, it follows a clearly defined route.

Interactive Experiences in Nature

Stezka čápa Vodňany – Zátiší II is a 440 m walking trail with 16 original interactive and informative elements that visitors can try out themselves. In the forest park in Zátiší, you will find wooden objects, giant mushrooms, the Stezka čápa Vodňana and a place to relax or have a picnic. Near MEVPIS Vodňany, the interactive educational and experiential Cesta úhoře trail, with game elements in a natural setting, explains the migration of the endangered eel. The trail is freely accessible. By comparison, the 440 m Stezka čápa focuses on 16 short activities for visitors to try out themselves.

Water Landscape and Educational Site

MEVPIS Vodňany is an educational and conference centre in the reconstructed Brokův mlýn and organises educational programmes for various target groups. As a protected natural area within a pond system, Malý ústavní rybník is located 1.5 km northwest of Vodňany’s historic town square. Vodňanské Benátky is a picturesque section of a medieval millrace in Vodňany. The protected pond area and the medieval millrace present two different aspects of the water landscape: a natural environment and a historically shaped urban setting.
