Stožice: Nature Trail, Village History and Landscape
Accommodation in Stozice
Stožice between Nature Trail and Village History
Stožice combines a varied nature trail with distinctive traces of local history. The Naučná stezka Stožice nature trail is approximately 8 km long. It begins in Stožice and returns to the settlement at the end. Its approximate length provides practical orientation for an excursion, while starting and returning in Stožice clearly define the route geographically and connect exploring the landscape with the village. This route gives the exploration a clear local framework without separating the village from its landscape.
Landscape to Discover
The nature trail runs along Svobodná hora, which lies at an elevation of 640 m above sea level. From there, views extend over parts of the Šumava, the Českobudějická pánev, the Písecké hory and the Vodňansko region. The information panels focus on local settlements, fauna and flora, the region’s fruit growing, and geographical topics. In this way, the route combines observation of nature with an accessible introduction to the landscape.
Stožice itself lies in the Vodňanská pánev. The area around Stožice and Křepice lies at the transition between the geomorphological units Šumavské podhůří, here in the Netonická vrchovina subregion, and Českobudějovická pánev, here in the Vodňanská pánev subregion. The floodplains of the Blanice and Radomilický potok contain extensive pond systems. Those who would like to compare different types of landscape during their stay will therefore find, alongside the nature trail, a wet floodplain and pond landscape here.
Literature and Village Center
Stožice village square is dominated by the Neo-Gothic Chapel of Saints Simon and Jude. Its façade features frescoes of Saint Florian and Saint Procopius. Another important point of reference is Josef Holeček: the writer and journalist was born in Stožice on 27 February 1853. His birthplace is House No. 7; a memorial plaque and the inscription “U Holečků” commemorate this fact.
Holeček’s literary work is also closely connected with his origins. His twelve-volume novel “Naši” is set mainly in his home village and its local surroundings. The village center can thus be understood not only through a single building, but also through the connection between a person, literature and the local living environment.
