Litochovice – historic farmsteads in the South Bohemian hill country
Accommodation in Litochovice
If you are looking for a place where landscape and rural architectural heritage come together directly, Litochovice offers several specific points of interest. The area is characterised by gently rolling, partly wooded hills typical of the harmonious South Bohemian agricultural landscape. Forests, watercourses and ponds complement this landscape. In addition, Litochovice is home to three immovable cultural monuments listed in the Central List of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic. Nature and history can therefore be discovered here together.
Rural Baroque and farmstead complexes
The Usedlost čp. 2 farmstead complex in Litochovice is particularly illustrative. It dates from the first half of the 19th century and consists of a residential building, stables, a barn and a coach house. Preserved features include a richly moulded volute gable and an adjoining gate dating from the Rural Baroque period. Heritage protection covers the entire property, including the grounds. This farmstead complex shows that the historic character of a rural farmstead is created not only by a single gable, but by the interplay of several parts of the building. This makes it a striking example of the farming-influenced architecture of the surrounding area.
Historic steward’s house and distinctive details
The architectural heritage also includes the Správcovský dům čp. 1 steward’s house. It was built in the first quarter of the 16th century as a small, unfortified aristocratic residence and belonged to the Prague Castle Chapter until 1850. Inside, the building preserves historic rooms and structural elements, including vaults, beam ceilings, floors, the roof truss, portals, doors and windows. The variety of these preserved elements draws attention to different layers of the building’s history, while the Usedlost čp. 2 farmstead complex is shaped more strongly by its overall rural form.
Further monuments in the village and in Střítež
Another protected example can be found in Střítež. The Usedlost čp. 8 farmstead complex was declared an immovable cultural monument in 1995. Its gable is considered the last surviving example in the village of the architecture typical of South Bohemia in the mid-19th century. The Chapel of Saint Florian also stands on the village square in Litochovice. Smaller details add to the character of the village as well: House No. 2 features a facade painting depicting a landscape and a windmill. In this way, representative, agricultural and everyday evidence of the past come together on different scales.
Cycle route and local culture of remembrance
The “Kolem tvrzí a Muzea venkovského života v Předslavicích” cycle tour passes through Litochovice. It provides another opportunity to experience the landscape and historic sites along a single route. The municipality adds a special note with a plaque recognising the exemplary care and complete reconstruction of the monument to the fallen of the First World War. Litochovice therefore offers various reasons to explore the area: from the hill country, Rural Baroque and historic interiors to cycling and visible culture of remembrance.
