Hájek: Village Structure and South Bohemian Village Character

Hájek U Bavorova is a small South Bohemian municipality on a gentle slope. Its village character preserves much of the historic settlement form: Approximately 90% of Hájek’s settlement structure retains the original layout dating from the time of its medieval foundation. The preserved village character reflects the Baroque-influenced form of South Bohemian farmsteads. Extensive, well-preserved farmsteads, courtyards, and barns still remain. The compact development is arranged around a generously designed village square that opens onto a spacious street frontage. The village layout, farm complexes, and square form a cohesive picture of rural architectural heritage. The local economy in Hájek was predominantly agricultural.

Between Hájek and Bavorov

Bavorov lies in the immediate vicinity of Hájek; its historic town centre is designated an urban conservation area, and Bavorov is less than 2 km from Hájek. Hájek lies approximately 150 m to the right of the road from Bavorov to Prachatice. Marked cycle route 1075 runs through Hájek. You can also take the bus from the junction near Hájek. This makes it possible to compare village and urban heritage structures in quick succession. The cycle route and the bus option at the junction provide different ways of arriving.

Helfenburk as a Day-Trip Destination

Helfenburk is located in the area around Hájek, a Gothic castle ruin from the 14th century in the forests between Bavorov and Volyně. Helfenburk has been open to the public since the 20th century. At Helfenburk, there is a free car park on a meadow below the ruin, less than 1 km from the ruin; a well-maintained asphalt forest road leads to the site. With prior arrangement, it is possible to stay overnight in the castle courtyard of Helfenburk under a dedicated shelter, provided that the specified rules are observed.

Landscape between Forest and Rolling Hills

A large forest lies west of Hájek and occupies a substantial part of the municipality. Hájek’s highest peak is also named Hájek and reaches an elevation of 588 m above sea level. The upland landscape near Hájek forms a transition between the rolling foothills of the Bohemian Forest and the flat landscape of the České Budějovice Basin. The relatively unspoiled surrounding landscape is characterised by well-balanced arrangements of settlements, fields, meadows, and forests.
